75% Use of drugs for hyperactivity in Brazil

A survey by the National Sanitary Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) showed that the consumption of the drug methylphenidate, used for the treatment of hyperactivity, increased 75% from 2009 to 2011 by children between the ages of six and 16 years. The research was based on data from the National System of Controlled Products Management (SNGPC) and also shows that, among the population aged 16 to 59 years, the growth in drug consumption was 27.4% - although lower, it is also considered an expressive increase.

The study indicates a close relationship between the pattern of use of methylphenidate and school activities. The prescription falls during the holidays and is significantly higher in the second half. In 2011, for example, the average Brazilian consumption in the first half was 19.7 cases per thousand children. Between August and December, the average rose to 26.6 cases per thousand.

Members of the Brazilian Association of Neurology and Child Psychiatry (Abenepi) affirm that the numbers may have increased due to an improvement in the diagnosis of this type of disease. On the other hand, the drug may be being used improperly by young people in search of better performance in public or vestibular competitions.

Methylphenidate is sold in Brazil with three different trade names. In 2009, 557,588 boxes of the drug were prescribed. In 2011, the number jumped to 1,212,855. Only eight Brazilian states registered a fall in prescription: Acre, Pará, Tocantins, Alagoas, Ceará, Piauí, Rio Grande do Norte and Rio de Janeiro. The Federal District recorded the highest consumption of the product in 2011: 114.59 cases per thousand inhabitants, while in 2009 the average was 59.42.

The work showed, however, that some professionals prescribed a quantity of researchers found that research data were passed on to state surveillance to identify evidence of substance abuse.

See how to improve the life of a child with ADHD

Most noted in children, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, also known as ADHD, causes a series of complications in learning and living with other people. "This disorder is a serious condition characterized by a chronic pattern of inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity, which can seriously affect the quality of life," says psychotherapist Evelyn Vinocur, a specialist in My Life and a member of the Brazilian Association for Attention Deficit. If your child is diagnosed with ADHD, it is best to follow up with the medical follow-up and medication treatment indicated. However, Evelyn Vinocour states that it is possible to make the child's routine easier by following these simple tips: <1-99> 1- When setting rules, do it simply and specifically. Preferably write the rules on small stickers in easy-to-see locations for your child. In addition, it is important to give feedback often so your child will know how you are doing and if you are acting properly. "In the hours of imposing discipline, do not talk too much or do anything about it: respond with clarity and appropriate action," says psychotherapist Evelyn. 2- Objective and meaningful rewards will generally work best for your child - but be careful with the excesses. Some situations like finishing homework or putting away toys after a moment of leisure can be rewarded in some way.

3- Help your child to change smoothly and gradually by planning in advance the activities that will come later. This helps keep pace and hold your attention, since he will always be prepared for the next activity.

Keep your sense of humor and be patient: with humor, you will be able to avoid conflicts. "Understand that the child will not always understand at first and will often have difficulty facing or performing certain tasks," says psychotherapist Evelyn. By looking at it with good humor and calmness, the environment becomes less conflicting and more conducive to the right learning.

5- Be aware of every opportunity to praise and reinforce positively whenever your child does something right. "Be careful, however, not to exaggerate in the celebration of small successes, for he will perceive and may think it is a forced happiness," says psychotherapist Evelyn.

6- Always keep in mind that you are dealing with a condition and that your child does not have a character flaw. "Wait for the child to have good days and bad days, and look at it as moments that you should go through," completes psychotherapist Evelyn.

7- Remember that blaming your child, your spouse, or yourself will not help in nothing. "All of you are together, in the same boat, and doing the best you can," says Evelyn Vinocur.
