Advanced age of parents increases risk of autism of the baby

Scientific studies have linked gestational diabetes to an increased risk of having children with autism. Now, a study published in the Annals of Epidemiology has found that the age of the parents may also influence the risk of this dysfunction in the child.

The analysis, developed at Aarhus University

in Denmark, collected data on more than 9,500 children diagnosed with autism. It was observed, then, that men who were parents over 35 were 28 percent more likely to have a child with autism. Among women, the risk varied between 21 and 37%. The percentage increased even more when the risk of parents with more than 40 years of age had a child with the disorder, ranging from 37 to 55%. Evaluating the same age group among women, the variation was from 28 to 65%. There was no change when both parents or only one of them was older. According to the researchers, it is possible that sperm or ovules of older people suffer more mutations, increasing the chance of generating children with autism, a dysfunction affecting five in every 10,000 children. They also concluded that more studies are needed to find out why the occurrence has no cumulative effect.

Prenatal vitamins decrease the chances of autism

Women who do not ingest vitamins from the beginning of gestation also have up to two times more likely to have autistic children, according to a study by researchers at the

UC Davis MIND Institute

in the United States. Scientists also advise women to take vitamin supplements - if necessary - as soon as they decide to become pregnant, to prevent malformation of the fetus. The researchers collected medical data from approximately 700 families in California who had children aged two and five years. After observing dietary habits, presence of autism in the family, and care of mothers during pregnancy, the researchers found that women who took prenatal vitamins from the first month of gestation were twice as likely to have children autism. According to the study, taking prenatal vitamins may have a specific effect on the child's genetic makeup. Therefore, these nutrients must be ingested from the beginning of gestation. The main vitamins that should be consumed are the B vitamins, especially vitamin B9 - also called folic acid - which has the ability to protect the brain from 70% of neural problems. However, every pregnant woman should follow the vitamin recipe indicated by her doctor.

Scientists have further found that continuing to take this type of vitamin in the breastfeeding period can bring benefits to the baby's neurons, since the nutrients are past mother to child through milk.
