Anvisa approves generic for treatment of type 2 diabetes

(Anvisa) approved the registration of the generic dapagliflozin, a new option for the treatment of patients with type 2 diabetes. The resolution was published in the Official Gazette (DOU) on Monday, March 27.

The medication is used to improve the glycemic control of the body of the diabetic patient, being indicated along with physical exercises and diet. The generic will be administered by the company Astrazeneca do Brasil Ltda and its pharmaceutical reference is the Forxiga remedy.

Dapagliflozin is reserved only for the treatment of type 2 diabetes and for the treatment of people with type 1 diabetes mellitus. it should not be used in the treatment of diabetic ketoacidosis or if the patient has kidney problems or cardiovascular diseases.

According to the agency, the drug works as a blockade of sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2), a protein responsible for reabsorption of glucose (sugar) in the kidney, contributing to the elimination of excess glucose through the urine.

Diabetes is a global public health problem affecting more than 400 million people, according to a global report by the World Health Organization (WHO) on the disease.
