Anvisa releases new drug to treat breast cancer

The National Agency of Sanitary Surveillance (Anvisa) has approved a medicine for the treatment of breast cancer that causes fewer side effects than traditional chemotherapy. The action is possible because the drug acts directly on the tumor, rather than affecting all the cells in the body.

The drug trastuzumab entansin (also called T-DM1) is indicated for an advanced breast cancer, identified as HER2 positive, which corresponds to 20% of all cases of the disease. Its use should occur when conventional treatment no longer yields results. In addition to avoiding the side effects of chemotherapy, it increases survival time by 50%.

Solange Moraes Sanches, a clinical oncologist at ACCamargo, explains that TDM-1 consists of using trastuzumab (the first HER-2 blocker ) coupled to chemotherapy. "The antibody carries the chemotherapeutic into the tumor cell and releases the drug in there, in a mechanism known as a trojan horse," he explains. To be approved, the drug had a survey involving a thousand women, about one hundred

One of the reasons for the best prognosis is that the new drug can be used for longer than traditional chemotherapy, which can be applied in up to eight sessions. The application of trastuzumab entansine is done every 21 days and can be used indefinitely, because it is less aggressive.
