Arterial thrombosis: understand the problem and know how to prevent it

In my last column I talked about calf pain, when it means a circulatory problem. We explain well what is the arterial circulation, its importance and the factors that trigger circulation problems. Today I am going to talk about arterial thrombosis, which is a more advanced stage of arterial disease, when the vessel is totally occluded, preventing normal blood circulation and the arrival of adequate nutrition in the affected region.

For an idea of the extent of the problems cardiovascular diseases, they are the main causes of death in women and men in Brazil. They account for about 20% of all deaths in individuals over 30 years. According to the Ministry of Health, there were 962,931 deaths in individuals over 30 years old in 2009.

When there is a total obstruction of the arteries of the brain, we call it a stroke, also known by the acronym AVC. In these cases the region to which the blood does not arrive suffers a cerebral infarct and dies. Its severity depends on the size and region affected. The same reasoning applies to myocardial infarction when we have a thrombosis of an artery that irrigates the heart muscle, causing a very serious injury in that region that has run out of blood. And so it may happen in the intestine, mesenteric thrombosis, which when it occurs leaves a large part of the intestine without blood supply and often leads to death by the severity of the event. In the lower limbs it causes severe pain, paleness, numbness and inability to walk. In these cases, it is essential to seek medical help immediately, because if left untreated, it can progress to gangrene and death.

People most likely to have arterial thrombosis are smokers, people with poorly controlled hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol and triglycerides , as well as very stressed individuals with atrial fibrillation and aneurysms.

It is also important to know the family history that can give valuable information to your doctor. Knowing the most common causes, we should always think about maintaining health and preventing the thrombotic event. Make a survey of your family trends and use this information to your advantage. We are products of our heredity and good or bad habits.

If you are from a family that has cases of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and hypertension, it is good to stay alert and to do a medical checkup from the age of 30. Also, cultivate good habits, not smoking, avoiding greasy foods, fried foods, sweets, white flour, excess salt and sugar. Do regular physical activity by practicing aerobic exercise 150 minutes per week and strength activity, like bodybuilding, twice a week. Try to deal with stress in your favor: in the most intense moments, spend this energy with gymnastics.

Regularly control cholesterol, triglycerides and glucose with your doctor. And if, despite all your efforts, your problem progresses to a thrombosis, seek medical help right away, because the earlier the treatment, the better the chance of success.

Remember: information without action is worthless. , so do your part, take good care of yourself.

Bariatric surgery may increase risk of alcohol dependence, says research

A survey conducted by the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in the United States shows that people undergoing bariatric surgery are at greater risk of becoming dependent on alcohol. The surgery reduces the size of the stomach and directs the food to an area of the intestine that absorbs fewer nutrients and calories.

Choosing foods can affect your oral health

Choosing foods can affect your oral health

Many dentists are concerned that their patients are consuming record highs of sugar-containing soft drinks, sweetened fruit juices, and non-nutritious snacks that can affect their teeth. These foods generally have little or no nutritional value and, over time, the teeth can bear the injury. Feeding patterns and food choices among children and adolescents are important factors that affect the speed at which the most young people can develop dental caries.
