Bad Breath: Tips to Avoid

Bad Breath: Tips to Avoid

Bad breath, more than a health problem, is a social discomfort. "Other people perceive and this can cause problems in love or work relationships," says dentist Artur Cerri, scientific advisor to the Brazilian Association of Dental Surgeons (ABCD).

Even because, although weak, it is very easy to feel bad breath in close relationships. "There is also the so-called 'halitosis of intimacy', perceptible from a distance of 30 centimeters or less, in situations like a kiss, in the person next to the movie chair, in the back seat of the car or even when talking close," classifies the dentist Maria Cecília Aguiar, president of the Brazilian Association of Halitosis (ABHA). The problem is that the person who has halitosis does not always feel their own breath, that is, they need to get a feedback from others, which do not always signal.

With Valentine's Day coming, you have to be careful about this problem. Often bad breath can signal a health problem, however it can also be the result of poor hygiene, among other habits. Here are some changes that prevent halitosis from appearing:

Always brush your teeth

Brushing your teeth helps to prevent the development of one of the sources of bad breath: "habit helps eliminate waste and bacterial plaque with less bacteria in their mouths, which are the producers of bad breath, and with less sources of food for them as well, "says Maria Cecília. The ideal is to have a habit of cleaning your mouth thoroughly after meals and do not forget to floss daily, since it will remove food between your teeth, as the dental practitioner Flavia Cury recalls.

Do not forget to clean the tongue

But it is no good to clean the tooth well if the tongue is not cleaned! "The food retained on the tongue, after an hour without food and with less salivary flow, increases its fermentation and exudes more odor," explains Flavia. This is because most of the bacteria in the mouth are concentrated in the tongue. Cleaning the tongue is very simple, it can be done with your toothbrush or with tongue and cheek cleansers, as your dentist advises.

Drink plenty of water

Dry mouth is a great environment for bacteria proliferate. "Proper saline in quality and quantity favors a good breath, because it helps in self-cleaning of the mouth, in the healing of the tissues of the mouth and in the fight against microorganisms (bacteria, viruses and fungi) that cause oral infections and bad breath", describes Maria Cecília . Drinking water is a good way to ensure your mouth will not dry out: just between two and three liters a day. "And do not expect thirst to drink water, make this act a habit," stresses the specialist.

If even ingesting a lot of water your mouth remains drier than normal, it is important to see a dentist. Some illnesses and medications can cause dryness in the area, causing bad breath.

Chew food badly

Another habit that helps to prevent bad breath is to chew food well. "The exercise in chewing stimulates the production of saliva," explains Maria Cecília. This is because saliva is indispensable for chewing properly.

Feed yourself every 3 hours

Being too fast for a long time can also cause bad breath. "If you stay a long time without eating, the stomach produces hydrochloric acid, which goes up the esophagus to the mouth, causing a bad odor," explains the dentist Cerri. In addition, the accumulation of food on the tongue and the reduction of the salivary flow also increase the bad odor in the mouth.

Eat some food in moderation

There are foods that we know that when consumed will cause a bad odor in the mouth: onion, garlic and alcoholic beverages. "These foods are called aromatic because they generate substances that are absorbed by the intestines and circulate in the bloodstream, being filtered by the lungs during the gas exchanges and can be eliminated next to the exhaled air. However, this alteration in breath has the characteristic odor of substance consumed, "says Maria Cecília.

In addition, some foods are more easily broken down in the mouth, which makes the cells work faster. "This is usually the case with food of animal origin, such as meat, poultry, fish, eggs ..."

Prioritize the consumption of good food for breath

Foods rich in fiber are friends of breath, because they stimulate salivary production, which makes the mouth cleaner. "Examples are fiber-rich substances such as apple, peanut, nuts, granola, raw carrots and foliage, and citrus fruits such as lemon and pineapple", list Maria Cecília

Avoid smoking

Smoking too can aggravate the breath, and not only because of the cigarette smell that the smoker exudes. "Smoking increases the desquamation of the mucous membranes of the mouth, compromises the production of saliva and predisposes to gum disease, and all of these are factors that can lead to halitosis," says the specialist.

Always go to the dentist

Many problems oral health may be linked to the onset of bad breath. "Too much tartar, cavities, infections can also cause halitosis, so it's important to always go to the dentist so he can see and correct these problems," says Flavia Cury. In addition, when the problem is related to a disease or medication that resects the mouth, the dentist can indicate artificial saliva that helps to reduce bad odor.

Infarction in women: Causes, treatment and consequences are different

Infarction occurs when the arteries supplying the blood to the heart are partially or totally obstructed, reducing the cardiac flow and damaging the heart muscle. Substances that clog arteries and contribute to the formation of blood clots are formed differently in men and women, as described. In some women, especially younger women, the plaques do not clog the arteries, but they can still form clots that would lead to a heart attack.
