Bioplasty: Know the dangers of filling with PMMA

Bioplasty is the name that some specialists give to fill with PMMA, a material that fills volumes of tissue, used by some in fills that alter some body shapes. It is called "plastic surgery without a scalpel", but it is actually a filler and is therefore considered an aesthetic treatment.

PMMA is a type of plastic that should be applied in small quantities mainly due to low quality of some of its products on the market. It should only be used with the prescription of a specialist, in the case a dermatologist or plastic surgeon, and in the amounts recommended by him, after all is a definitive implant and can cause complications such as nodule formation, stiffening of the region, infection, allergies, chronic pain, rejection of the organism and even tissue necrosis.

Indications of bioplasty

PMMA has the effect of filling certain regions on the face or body. Therefore, many specialists perform it in fills, mainly in the face, because the method allows to change the region of the cheek apples (malar and zygomatic region), chin, wrinkles and contour of the jaw, making it more delimited and accentuated. It can also be applied to the buttocks and calves, but the application of large quantities is controversial due to the potential for complications.

In general, the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery indicates that this filler is only used in repairing plastics. As for example, for the correction of facial lipoatrophy in patients with AIDS, that is, the fat loss that seropositive patients present and gives them a more aged appearance. In these cases, bioplasty is one of the possible techniques that help the patient regain an appearance more suited to their chronological age.

Possible Complications of Bioplasty

In bioplasty, PMMA is injected into microspheres. It must be purified so that the diameters of the spheres exceed 50 microns (i.e., 0.05 mm). The very small spheres cause complications like inflammatory reaction and allergies, as they are attacked and absorbed by the cells of the immune system. Only a minority of manufacturers achieve this quality, and these products are much more expensive. Therefore, it is not financially feasible to apply large quantities of PMMA.

Irrespective of the quantity applied, chronic inflammatory reactions, chronic pain, infections, nodule formation, regional stiffening, organ rejection and even tissue necrosis may occur. But the risk increases with the amount applied. Therefore, the volume used should follow the expert's judgment.

When applied in large volumes, PMMA can also spread to other parts of the body. When this occurs, it is very difficult to remove the product completely from the body later. There is still the fact that the product is injected into deep layers of the skin and its total removal is very difficult and complicated, which makes it a definitive implant. Therefore, if there is any complication, there is no guarantee that the product will be taken completely, and the patient may present with subsequent allergy and infections, and more surgical interventions are needed.

Who is the professional capable of performing the bioplasty?

Ideally, PMMA should be applied by a specialist, usually a plastic surgeon or dermatologist. Otorhinolaryngologists may also be able to perform this type of procedure when they have adequate complementary training.

Bioplasty contraindications

Prior to bioplasty, it is important that the patient is clinically evaluated to see if he has no active, acute, or chronic disease. This is only an exception in cases of AIDS patients, who can undergo surgery to correct facial lipoatrophy.

Furthermore, the procedure is contraindicated for people who have no medical prescription to do so, since the orientation of a

How bioplasty is performed

In bioplasty PMMA is applied through microcannules, similar to a tipless needle. The method consists of the implantation of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA). It is worth mentioning that filling with PMMA is an outpatient procedure, that is, it should be done in a hospital environment.

Sessions

Usually only one section of bioplasty is sufficient.

Pre-bioplasty care

Before Bioplasty only requires the skin to be cleaned where the PMMA will be injected.

Care after the bioplasty

Only on the first day is it important to avoid lowering your face or making too much effort. In general, after the procedure there is no need for extra care, but it is recommended to use painkillers and avoid excessive movement of the site. If the region becomes a little swollen, it is necessary to apply cold or cold compresses. It is also important not to expose the direct action of the sun and to use sunscreen with SPF above 30.
