Black chocolate helps protect skin from the sun's rays

Black chocolate helps protect skin from the sun's rays

The consumption of black chocolate allows to support higher doses of solar radiation on the skin, says a study done by the University of Laval, Quebec, Canada. According to the scientists who carried out the research, some work done in England and Germany has already shown that this relationship is true but, as they were done with a small number of people, their results could be challenged.

During the current study, about 60 women were divided into two groups. Each participant in the first group received four black chocolate tablets, while the second received normal chocolate. During the research period, they had small parts of their bodies exposed to controlled amounts of ultraviolet rays.

Researchers found that women who ate dark chocolate were more protected from this small amount of ultraviolet rays. According to them, this effect occurs because authentic black chocolate is rich in polyphenols, substances found in cocoa, and are part of the composition of natural antioxidants, which protect against radiation.

But, according to the authors of study, the result of the research does not diminish the importance of the use of sunscreen, especially in the period between 10 and 14 hours, when the sun is stronger.

Chocolate against stress

Another research, published in Journal of Proteome Research , suggests that bitter chocolate has the potential to reduce stress levels and help control anxiety. The study analyzed the daily consumption of chocolate and the level of the hormone cortisol of volunteers, a substance known as the stress hormone.

The study was conducted with 30 healthy adults, consumed an average of 40 grams of bitter chocolate daily for two weeks. Participants had anxiety and stress levels determined at the beginning and end of the study through blood and urine analysis.

After the end of the study, the scientists analyzed that the cortisol level dropped considerably in all participants reaching a 40% reduction in those who suffered from anxiety.
