Brain aneurysm is linked to smoking

A survey by the São Paulo State Department of Health states that two out of three cases of cerebral aneurysm are linked to smoking. The analysis took into account 250 patients seen in the last two years through the neurosurgery service of the Transplant Hospital of the State of São Paulo. Of the analyzed group, 62% smoked regularly when they presented the problem.

This relationship occurs because tobacco causes abnormal dilatation in the walls of cerebral blood vessels. According to the authors of the study, cigarettes destroy a protein present in the wall of the arteries called elastin, which makes the walls more fragile.

In addition to being more vulnerable to aneurysm, smokers tend to develop the most aggressive form of causing bleeding. In the study, 12% of patients who had a cerebral hemorrhage died before they reached the hospital.

The study also found that 80% of the patients seen are women. It is already being investigated by experts if there is a relationship between the disease and the hormonal changes of the female organism. It is known that women have more delicate and sinuous blood vessels than men.
