Brazil has the lowest AIDS detection rate in the last 12 years

According to data from the latest Epidemiological Bulletin on HIV and AIDS, released on December 1 by the Ministry of Health, the AIDS detection rate fell by 5, 5% from 2013 to 2014 in the country - from 20.8 cases to 100 thousand inhabitants in 2013 to 19.7 cases per 100 thousand inhabitants in 2014 - which is the largest reduction in the last 12 years. The new bulletin shows important declines in the mortality coefficient in states such as São Paulo (-40.2%), Rio Grande do Sul (-10%), , 9% in the period 2003 to 2014); Santa Catarina (-19.8%), and Goiás (-12.5%). In addition, from January to October 2015, more than 65,700 new people with HIV and AIDS were treated by the SUS, an increase of 7% compared to the same period in 2014.

"Our concern is to ensure that all and every citizen undergoes the examination to identify the existence of the virus and, if so, immediately initiates the treatment that is provided free of charge on the public health network to 100% of HIV patients. This action has a crucial impact on mortality and quality of life of these people, "said Minister of Health, Marcelo Castro, in a note.

HIV grows among young people

The worrying data comes from the young population aged 15-24, where the number of infection has increased at an alarming rate, with an increase of 41% between 2004 and 2014. In 2004, the detection rate among young people was 9.5 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, which is equivalent to about 3.4 thousand cases. By 2014, this number was 4,600 cases, representing a detection rate of 13.4 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

Targets 90-90-90

Targets 90-90-90 were established Joint United Nations Program on HIV / AIDS (UNAIDS), and aims to reach 90% of the people tested, 90% treated and 90% undetectable viral load by 2020. and achieved improvements in all indicators. In 2012, the country had 44% of the patients in treatments, which represented an increase of 43% compared to 2014. From 2009 to 2015 , the number of people under treatment in the Unified Health System increased 53.2%, from 231,000 people to 450,000.

Results of the new strategy

This year, the Ministry published a new Clinical Protocol of Guidelines and Treatment that simplifies procedures for the use of antiretroviral drugs after exposure to the HIV virus. Published in August this year, the document recommends a single treatment scheme for all situations. In addition, there is also a reduction in the follow-up time of patients from six months to three months. All of these changes made the number of Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) from 3,600 treatments - in the second half of 2014 - to more than 10.4 treatments in the same period of 2015, an increase of 186%.

Still in 2015, it was possible to observe a growth of 41% in the number of people with uncommitted immune system (CD4 higher than 500 cells per mm3) under treatment. They were people who, in the previous recommendation, had no indication of treatment and who from the new protocol had access to medicines, improving the quality of life of people living with HIV and AIDS and also reducing the transmission of the virus. The number of patients who arrived at services with a late diagnosis with a serious immunologic impairment was also shown to be a sign of the success of the new treatment strategy in 2014. This proportion went from 31% in 2009 to 25% in 2015.

The numbers in relation to vertical transmission from mother to child also show a significant reduction. According to the new bulletin, between 2013 and 2014, there was a reduction of 9.7% in the detection rate in children under five years: from 3.1 to 2.8 per 100 thousand inhabitants. Between 2002 and 2014, this drop is even more pronounced, 58.2%.

The epidemic in Brazil is stabilized, with a detection rate of around 19.7 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. This represents about 40,000 new cases a year. Since the beginning of the AIDS epidemic in Brazil - in 1980 - until June 2015, 798,366 AIDS cases were registered in the country.

Study shows that people who are afraid of a dentist have more oral health problems

A study developed by the Swiss University of Gothenburg revealed that people who have high levels of anxiety before undergoing dental treatments have worse oral health. The research "Anxiety in dental procedures: Psychosocial aspects of oral health", a doctoral thesis by Viktor Carlsson, indicated that phobias related to dentists resulted in an irregular dental treatment and dissatisfaction with dental aesthetics.
