Breast asymmetry: see what to do when the breasts are different

Every woman knows, but does not like to admit it: Breasts always have different size. But this is not always a problem, as we realize that the asymmetry in the body is something natural and, in a sense, even welcome.

In medicine, the term "mammary asymmetry" is used to denote a difference in appearance of the breasts of women, which can be of various types: size, position of the areolas, shape, insertion in the chest, lateral extension of the breast, weight, among others.

Breast asymmetry is extremely common and should not be motive . However, attention should be paid to sudden changes in the appearance of the breasts, especially if it is associated with fever or pain on the spot. In these cases it may be mastitis which is a picture of inflammation of the breasts. Another attention situation is the presence of palpable lumps in the breasts that may be small or even large enough to distort the appearance of the breast. These nodules always need to be evaluated by a mastologist.

When should this asymmetry be operated with a plastic?

Breast asymmetry should be evaluated in consultation with the plastic surgeon when the appearance of the breasts is bothering. Excluding all breast diseases that can cause this change, it is up to the plastic surgeon to resort to purely aesthetic techniques to try to minimize breast asymmetry.

Doctors often recommend that small asymmetries not be operated. The reason is that every surgery results in a scar of different sizes and qualities. Only during the medical consultation with your plastic surgeon will you be able to decide if the benefits of a surgery are greater than the risks that may occur. There are risks of anesthesia, recovery, bleeding, poor appearance of scars, among others that are discussed in detail during the medical consultation.

What plastic surgeries can be done in these cases?

There is no single surgery for all cases, but rather an individualized approach that can only be decided in medical consultation and physical examination. Therefore, it is a surgery of moderate to large complexity, depending on the cases.

To understand in a simple way how the surgery is, think of the following:

Do I want to reduce the bigger breast or increase the smaller breast?

  • I want to lower my breast a little And increase my breast a little?
  • I just want to increase the smaller breast?
  • I just want to reduce the bigger breast?
  • These are some questions that you should take to your For example, if one breast is much smaller than the other that already looks good, the plastic surgeon may choose to only operate the smaller breast by placing a silicone implant. Thus, the patient will only have a small scar on only one breast.

In cases when both breasts are droopy and have different sizes, there is usually a choice of bilateral breast remodeling, with or without silicone implants. This decision to use a silicone breast implant ("mastopexy") depends on breast tissue quality and patient expectancy.

What are the expected results?

It is important to note that the breasts will never be perfectly alike. The plastic surgeon always tries to do as close as possible, but the quality and final result depends very much on how the patient will recover and have its healing. It is necessary to follow the medical recommendations to take care of the scars and to follow the evolution of the surgery. The result is not immediate because the breast becomes swollen for a few weeks. After a few months, it is normal to observe a "scale" in which the breast is more comfortable and more natural looking.

Last tip: always go to a doctor of the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery who is the only official society of plastic surgeons in Brazil.

Perfiloplasty: surgery joins plastic on the nose and chin

A profile of the plastic surgery is associated with two procedures: chin surgery and nose surgery. The aim of the procedure is to significantly improve facial harmony by treating the two areas that most contribute to the aesthetics of the face. Profiles of the prothyoplasty A profiling is indicated in cases where there is a disproportion between the nose and chin, because the procedure aims to harmonize the proportion between both to improve the facial esthetics of the patient.

The technique acts by generating heat in the tissue under the skin, which induces the production of new collagen fibers and improves the appearance of the skin. "For this, high-frequency currents are emitted, which have an approximate voltage of 30,000 to 40,000 Volts and a frequency of 1560 to 200 kilohertz," explains dermatologist Ana Paula Jordão of Vivid Clinic Radiofrequency indications "Among the most common indications for radiofrequency are: improving skin flaccidity, reducing wrinkles, reducing cellulite, acne scar treatment and stretch marks," explains dermatologist Elvira Cancio Assumpção, a member of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology.
