Breastfeeding decreases risk of breast cancer

Researchers at the University of Granada, Spain, have found that women who breastfed their children for more than six months are less likely to develop breast cancer.

To reach these results, the researchers studied 504 women between the ages of 19 and 70, all of whom were diagnosed and treated for breast cancer at the San Cecilio Hospital in Granada between 2003 and 2008. The analysis showed that only 135 of these women were not mothers, while the other 369 had at least the researchers concluded that breastfeeding is an effective method of preventing breast cancer, and that the risk of developing breast cancer declines by 4.3 percent for each year that a woman breastfeeds her children.

Scholars also found no statistically significant differences between the average age of the cancer diagnosis and whether or not the woman had children.

How to detect breast cancer early?

Second largest cause of mortality among women, breast cancer, when diagnosed and treated early, greatly increases the chances of survival of the patients. Women can and should be actively involved in this detection by performing regular mammograms and clinical breast exams and even by daily and / or monthly self-examination.

It is important to note that breasts are different from one woman to another and that changes may occur due to age, menstrual cycle, pregnancy, menopause, or with the use of birth control pills or other hormones. Usually the breasts are a little grainy and uneven. It is also common for women's breasts to become engorged and sensitive a little before or during the menstrual period.

It should be remembered that a monthly self-examination does not replace screening mammography or clinical breast exams performed by a professional of health in women over the age of forty.

A screening mammogram is the best tool available to detect early breast cancer, even before the onset of symptoms. Studies have shown that screening mammography reduces the risk of death from breast cancer.

Early detection of a tumor is not a guarantee that a woman will have her life preserved. Some fast-growing cancers may already have spread to other parts of the body before they have been detected.
