British team investigates ways to stop bone resorption due to periodontal diseases

A British research team, led by Dr. Louise Belfield, is seeking a way to reprogram the immune system to stop bone destruction, which can progress to the loss of the dental element in severe periodontal disease. The current treatment options for periodontal bone resorption are limited.

The study will focus on the bone resorption that occurs due to periodontitis, which is a common oral disease and which affects the structures supporting the teeth, in addition to repercussions on other diseases, such as diabetes and atherosclerosis, related to bone resorption.
