Broccoli can help fight colon cancer

Broccoli can help fight colon cancer

A compound found in broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables may not only help prevent colon cancer, but also treat it. This is a research study by Texas A & M University in the United States.

This cancer-fighting compound is called sulforan and is found in vegetables such as Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, and cabbage. However, its highest concentrations are in the young shoots of broccoli. Sulforan can also be found in a dietary supplement called BSE.

The American university survey was attended by 28 volunteers in their 50s. According to the study, it was found that volunteers who ate more cruciferous had higher levels of the p16 gene that helps fight colon cancer.

It is important to note that the study does not suggest that traditional treatments, chemo and radiotherapy, are abandoned. He only proposes that crucifers should also be part of this treatment.

Despite the benefits of crucifers, some care needs to be taken. This is because previous animal studies have pointed out that sulforane induces a protein called Nrf2, which has an antioxidant effect and contributes to the fight against early cancer. However, when the disease is more advanced, this same substance can contribute to tumor growth.

A team of Harvard Medical School experts found that consuming two to three cups of coffee per day reduces the risk of depression. Scholars followed the health of a group of more than 50,000 nurses over a decade and conducted questionnaires to record how much they consumed coffee. Only 2,600 of these women had signs of depression during the period, with most of them consuming little coffee or not drinking.
