Caesarean section may not be the best option for premature babies

Caesarean section may not be the best option for premature babies

Many obstetricians opt for cesarean section when the fetus does not grow as expected, believing that this type is best in these cases. But a survey presented yesterday at the 32nd Annual Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine Meeting in Dallas (USA) shows the opposite. Preterm infants who are born through cesarean delivery may be at increased risk for respiratory problems compared to similar newborns born in normal birth.

The researchers from the Society for Maternal-fetal Medicine (USA) ), reviewed birth certificates and hospital discharge data of 2,560 preterm infants. Those who were born cesarean before 34 weeks of pregnancy had a 30% higher risk of developing respiratory problems (respiratory distress syndrome of the newborn) compared to babies born with normal delivery at the same gestational age.

Not always it is clear why a fetus is small. The most common causes are high maternal blood pressure, placental problems, poor nutrition, smoking, or alcohol use during pregnancy. Regardless of the reasons, researchers say that caesarean section does not offer any protection to babies.

They warn that surgery should only be done when there is a good reason for this, such as fetal distress or falling heart rate. Being small by itself is not a sufficient reason to opt for a cesarean section - it is riskier for the mother and there is no benefit to the baby.

Know different types of delivery and choose the best one for you

Cesarean section or normal birth? If this was the biggest doubt of the future moms during pregnancy, when it was the best method to give birth, now there are new alternatives of delivery for the arrival of the baby.

In the water

Very popular in Russia, the child is born in a container (tub or bathtub) with warm water, which avoids the shock of the environment exchange. Some maternity wards have special delivery and bathing chairs for this method.

The purpose of this procedure is to relax the patient and decrease back and belly pain. The water temperature should be around 35 degrees, but before starting the technique, the pregnant woman needs to be at least seven centimeters dilated.

At home

For moms who wish to give birth with all the comfort and cosiness of the room, although it is not all obstetricians who attend births at home. It is usually done by an obstetrician nurse or by a doula, a professional birth attendant. This technique allows for greater family involvement and may be calmer for the mother. But it is only possible in low-risk pregnancies. And even in such cases, one must take and the lack of adequate hospital equipment nearby in the event of any complications. This way, the risks increase.

Squatting

Childbirth is normal, what changes is the sitting position. The habit comes from the Brazilian Indies and has as an ally the unavoidable help of gravity for the baby to be born. But it also requires participation of the woman. The weight of the child, uterus, and placenta would ease the process.

What is the difference between normal and humanized delivery?

What is the difference between normal and humanized delivery?

Conceptually, "normal childbirth" is the traditional vaginal delivery assisted in a hospital setting, in which all procedures and interventions are used as a "routine" procedure. Among these procedures are the systematic scraping of the pubic hair (tricotomy), use of the bladder catheter to empty the bladder, complete fasting of at least six hours, prepartum intestinal lavage (enema), permanent venous puncture, interventional care throughout (analgesics, anesthetics, sedatives, oxytocics to sometimes stimulate contractions) and in repetitive vaginal touches, early artificial rupture of the pouch (amniotomy), episiotomy (cut in the perineum) or even the application of routine forceps unnecessary.

Vitamin D protects your health and that of your baby during pregnancy

Your baby is not yet born and needs to be vitaminized! Through you, of course, you must be feeding yourself with more quality. A balanced diet rich in both macronutrients and micronutrients is essential for your child to develop in a healthier way. But eating well is not always enough. During pregnancy you may need doses of vitamin D well above those considered sufficient, in order to ensure the health of this small human being still in formation.
