Although the overall incidence of head and neck cancer has declined in the United States, the overall rate of oropharyngeal cancer (the part of the throat just after the mouth) is stagnant and appears to be growing in men under the age of 45, according to a review in the recent issue of the American Cancer Society journal.

Erich M. Sturgis, MD, MPH, and Paul Cinciripini, PhD, MD Cancer Center Anderson, of the University of Texas, Houston, concluded that stagnant rates of oropharyngeal cancer, particularly tonsil and tongue cancer, in the face of declining tobacco use - the leading cause of head and neck cancer - are probably explained by increasing the prevalence of oropharyngeal exposure to a tumor-causing virus.
