Children attending crèches suffer more stress

A new study on early childhood education found increases in stress-related cortisol in children attending the gardens of childhood. The increases were higher in schools where teachers were supercontrollers. The study, published in the journal Child Development , was conducted by researchers at the University of Minnesota, Georgetown University, and the Oregon Social Learning Center in the United States. The researchers analyzed about 150 children aged three to four years in 110 different families attending day care centers.

The behavior of these children was observed, as well as the behavior of those responsible for them in daycare. To evaluate them, saliva samples were taken to measure cortisol. The study found that about 40% of children had elevated cortisol, large enough to indicate stress. It was also concluded that the increase of cortisol during the day was greater in places where the caregivers were invasive or controlling. In such places, there was little play time, and children spent long periods of time in activities structured by counselors. Although many of these structured activities seemed intended to help the preschooler learn letters, numbers, and colors, most of the activities were not done in a way that allowed children to learn actively through the games, but rather in a routine way, which required something like sitting quietly and responding when called.

The highest elevation in cortisol has implications for boys and girls in terms of behavior. Girls with higher hormone rates acted more anxiously, while boys became more irritated and aggressive.

In order to arrive at these results, the researchers analyzed birth certificates of babies born in Chile between 2004 and 2006 - in 2005 there was a earthquake of 7.9 degrees on the Richter scale , in the county of Tarapacá. Through the certificates, it was possible to determine the sex, weight, height and gestational age of the more than 600 thousand children born in this period.

Passive smoking is associated with lung disease in children

Secondhand smoke can affect the behavior and learning of children, to favor the appearance of ear problems and still to cause the little ones to miss more in the school. But the problems stemming from living with an adult addicted to smoking do not stop there. A new study links living with someone who cultivates this habit to develop lung disease years later.
