Chronic spontaneous urticaria is a non-contagious disease characterized by daily or near-daily occurrence of urticaria (skin blemishes) and angioedema (rapid swelling) for a period longer than 6 weeks without causing them to be caused by food, cosmetics, cleaning products or any other external factor.

Although not a known disease, chronic urticaria affects 1% of the world population, and most cases - approximately 66% - are spontaneous. UCE can occur at any age, but the age group most affected is between 20 and 40 years.

According to Solange do Valle, immunologist and head of the Immunology Service of HUCFF of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, urticaria chronic disease is more frequent than diseases considered common, such as rheumatoid arthritis and Alzheimer's

Awareness event

Christ the Redeemer donned the shirt for the UCE's awareness raising campaign - Dissemination

To promote awareness of the theme , Pharmaceuticals Novartis created the first awareness campaign - All about UCE. The event that happened on Thursday (05) in Rio de Janeiro, brought new data about the disease, stories of people who fight against the UCE and was also attended by celebrities such as Eriberto Leão (ambassador of the cause), Gabriel O Thinker, Ellen Roche and Flavio Canto

Data on the UCE

The Ipsos Institute, at the request of the pharmaceutical company Novartis, developed a research to understand the knowledge of the population about the UCE. According to the results, 91% of people are totally unaware of the disease. One of the most worrisome indexes of the research is that young people are more unfamiliar with the disease, 94% of the 16-34 year olds have never heard of the disease. UCE. This has a great impact, considering that this is the age group most affected by the condition.

Furthermore, it is possible to note the lack of knowledge of the UCE due to the fact that most participants do not know the causes of the disease. Many of the respondents believe that UCE occurs because of emotional stress (22%) or food (18%), and that it is an autoimmune disease.

But, finally, how to diagnose and treat UCE?

The main symptoms of spontaneous chronic urticaria are red patches on the skin and intense itching, however, the disease is much more than that. Due to stress and difficulty sleeping, UCE causes unproductivity and affects the quality of life of the patient more than those who suffer from leprosy, psoriasis and vitiligo (other diseases that cause skin lesions). clinical, therefore only with the symptoms and medical history it is possible to diagnose the disease. However, due to the lack of knowledge of the disease, the average for the diagnosis is 2 years, but some may take up to 10 years to find that they suffer from chronic spontaneous urticaria. For this reason, many patients end up giving up trying to find a cause for this problem.Although UCE is a serious disease, there is treatment. The goal of treatment is symptom control. With the treatment, 92% of the patients get complete control of the symptoms, recovering the quality of life.
