Diabetes can cause bad breath and periodontal disease

Diabetes is a disease that causes increased blood glucose (amount of glucose in the blood). When the glucose level stays out of the normal range (above or below) there are changes in our body that impair health. The latest issue of the International Diabetes Federation, published :

  • The number of people with diabetes is increasing in all countries
  • 50% of people with diabetes are unaware of this condition
  • Brazil ranks fourth among the countries with the highest prevalence of diabetes: 13.4 million people with the disease . This corresponds to approximately 6.5% of the population between 20 and 79 years old.

The causes of this increase are associated with sedentary lifestyle and obesity for type 2 diabetes. However, type 1 diabetes (of genetic origin) is also increasing , it is not known why.

Ketone breath (similar to the smell of an old apple) is characteristic in diabetics and periodontal disease is often present.

Early diagnosis and proper treatment of diabetes prevent many of the harmful consequences to health, but the number of people with diabetes who are unaware of this condition is worrying. It is considered a silent disease, since many people do not show symptoms or do not give importance to signs such as blurred vision, drowsiness, cramps, cramps, tingling and numbness of the lower limbs, organic weakness, discomfort to work, discouragement, physical mental, erectile dysfunction and ketonic breath.

Ketone breath (similar to the smell of an old apple) is characteristic in diabetics and periodontal disease is usually present. These signs may appear before other symptoms, so a routine consultation and a good anamnesis may lead the dentist to refer the patient to the doctor and thus reach the early diagnosis of diabetes.

Treatment of periodontal disease is extremely important because, like any infection, it is a factor that raises blood glucose levels and makes it difficult to control blood glucose levels.

symptom of periodontal disease, which is gum bleeding (at the time of brushing, flossing or even spontaneously). In the diabetic patient, periodontal disease is more severe because of the difficulty of healing (changes occur in small blood vessels) and the ease of contracting infections (immunity decreases). If the patient is smoker and hypertensive, the consequences will be even greater.

Halitosis (bad breath), xerostomia (dry mouth), candidiasis, canker sores and cavities are other oral manifestations that can occur in the unbalanced diabetic, that is,

In the care of a diabetic patient, the dentist has some additional care, such as making short consultations (preferably in the middle of the morning), gauging pressure, choosing medications correctly, and exchange of information with the doctor. Some procedures, such as surgery and implantation, need to be well indicated and performed at the right time, as the result depends on good disease control and stability.

Every patient with diabetes should be aware of the importance of their oral health and not forget about:

  • Tell the dentist that you are diabetic and which medications you use
  • Have a dental assessment at least every six months
  • Carefully groom mouth care using brush, floss and scraper
  • Make professional cleaning at least twice a year
  • Keep the blood glucose level balanced.
