Do you know where fat goes when you lose weight?

Weight loss is undoubtedly one of the most talked about subjects among people. Diets, workouts, superfoods, every day a new formula for losing weight is shared around the world. But, do you know what happens to the fat that was in your body, after you eliminate it?

Many think that it is turned into muscles, others that it is eliminated through urine or feces. But according to Ruben Meerman, a former bodybuilder and personality from Australian TV, and Andrew Brown, a researcher at the University of New York, South Wales, Australia, when you lose weight, you exhale your fat.

Our body needs a certain amount of energy to be able to function properly and this energy is gained through food. But when we consume more energy than we spend, it gets stored in adipose cells known as triglycerides, which are made up of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen.

When we consume less energy than we spend, our body absorbs this stored fat. These triglycerides enter the bloodstream and break down into small pieces of fatty acids that will fuel our body.

For this to be possible, these fatty acids are broken down into smaller chemical components again. This breakdown of chemical bonds produces energy and then our body gets a little water and a lot of carbon dioxide (CO2).

Research indicates that to burn 1 kg of fat, for example, a human needs to inhale on average 3 kg of oxygen, accelerating the metabolic processes, producing almost 1kg of CO2 and 500g of water. This water can be eliminated from the body through any body fluid, but it is the lungs that are responsible for weight loss, eliminating CO2 from the body.

According to the study authors, this process makes up the so-called harmonious cycle. Because the fat transformed into CO2 is returned to the atmosphere and becomes fuel for the plants, the main food we should consume for good health.
