Drinking coffee before napping may ease fatigue, study finds
If you are very tired but do not know what it is, can it help you more: have coffee or take a quick nap? Know that putting these two things together can be a perfect match. Since 1997, several studies have tried to find scientific evidence that this combo can do well in times of exhaustion.
A study at Laughborough University in the UK revealed drinking coffee and taking a nap right away helps to improve the condition of alertness and attention. The analysis was done with 12 people who had slept little in the previous nights. Thus, some participants had to drink a large cup of coffee and took a nap for 15 to 20 minutes while others did just one of these things.
After waking up, everyone underwent a complicated test, in which they should drive in a simulator for two hours. Scientists aimed to assess how alert these people were.
The results show that individuals who drank coffee and slept performed better than those who drank coffee or just slept. Thus, in the evaluation they were less likely to make steering wheel errors and remained more stable in their tracks.
According to the researchers, the finding is associated with the mechanism of caffeine functioning. When drinking a cup of coffee, the substance takes 30 minutes to produce the effect that can make the person more attentive for up to five hours.
To obtain the desired result, it is necessary to sleep 15 minutes before the drink begins, otherwise you will be deregulating your sleep even more. The so-called "caffeinated nap" technique helps to alleviate the impacts of a badly slept night, but it can not be replaced by sleep.
