Even in small amounts, physical activity can lower blood pressure

A study by Pennington Biomedical Research showed that even light exercise can help older, obese women reduce their blood pressure numbers during exercise. Although the increase in blood pressure during exercise is normal, the very marked increase has been associated with an increased risk of heart disease - independent of resting blood pressure. Living with hypertension

The 404 women who participated in the study were divided into four groups. Between the ages of 45 and 75, all were overweight or obese, sedentary, and had higher than normal blood pressure. At baseline, 204 women had pre-hypertension - greater than 120/80 mm of mercury (mmHg) but lower than the high blood pressure threshold, which is 140/90 mm Hg.

In three out of four groups, physical exercise was practiced at different levels for six months, and in the other group, no activity beyond the usual was practiced. In the first group, 2.5 hours of moderate physical activity per week were practiced; the second exercised for half that time and the third had four hours of moderate exercise.

In the end, all three exercise groups showed improvement in their blood pressure during exercise. In the most active group, systolic blood pressure (the highest number) fell by an average of 14 points. The least active group was behind, with 11 points in systolic blood pressure.

There was no decrease in the blood pressure of resting women. But since high blood pressure during exercise can cause heart damage, this finding shows that moderate exercise can do good to the heart. People who do not have high blood pressure can benefit from this effect.

Maintain controlled pressure

In addition to exercise, other individual factors must be observed by those who need to control blood pressure. Evelyn Vinocur, neuropsychiatry and psychotherapist member of the Brazilian Association of Psychiatry, teaches you how to protect your body from hypertension.

Hypercholesterolemia

Increased bad cholesterol in the blood or LDL is one of the major cardiovascular risk factors. Some foods high in cholesterol and saturated fats are: pork, beef with visible fat, whole milk berries, sour cream, oil and egg.

HDL

It is known as good cholesterol and protects the heart in levels appropriate. When it is low, it can be increased in response to weight reduction, physical exercise, and smoking cessation.

Diabetes

Insulin resistance and diabetes are conditions frequently associated with high blood pressure, favoring the occurrence of cardiovascular diseases, mainly coronary diseases. Its prevention is based on the reduction of caloric intake, the regular practice of aerobic physical exercises.

Menopause

The reduction of estrogen (female hormones) - after menopause - increases cardiovascular risk by two to four times. Postmenopausal estrogen replacement is not contraindicated in hypertensive women as it has little influence on blood pressure.

Oxidative stress

Evidence accumulates that oxidative stress is a relevant risk factor for cardiovascular disease , being able to associate with diet hypercaloric and poor in fruits and vegetables. Correction of this food intake can minimize this risk.

Psychological stress

Reduction of psychological stress is recommended to reduce the overload of neurohumoral influences of the central nervous system on the circulation. Yoga, biofeedback, transcendental meditation, tai chi chuan, psychotherapy and self-monitoring can help you control this component.
