A recent study of the
FITNESS Sex, exercise, sexual performance men who exercised had higher rates of sexual performance than sedentary men. A total of 178 healthy men, with a mean age of 62 years, were studied. Participants completed questionnaires covering six areas: the ability to have an erection, the ability to reach orgasm, the quality of the erection, the erection frequency, sexual function in general and sexual problems. They found that men who were moderately active - all they had to do in a hurried walk of only 30 minutes a day, four days a week - were about two thirds less likely to have sexual dysfunction than the sedentary.
Men also completed a questionnaire asking how often they exercised lightly (such as yoga), moderate exercise (such as a brisk walk), or vigorous exercise (such as running), as well as the average duration of their series. Based on these responses, 53% of the men were classified as sedentary, 14% as active, 9% were moderately active and 24% were highly active.
The responses were converted to a numerical score on a scale of 0 to 100, in which higher values correspond to the better function. The men's score of average sexual function was 53 points. The sedentary men scored just 43 points on average.
The moderately active scored 72 and the highly active 70 points. After adjusting for factors that could affect sexual functioning - age, race, body mass index, heart disease, diabetes and depression - the researchers found that men who were moderately or highly active were 65 percent less likely to have sexual dysfunction - defined as a score lower than 40 - than sedentary men. Scholars hypothesize that exercise can increase the blood flow of the penis, facilitating erection. In addition, they can make men feel better about themselves and, in turn, can improve sexual fitness. Although several studies have shown that exercise can help improve sexual function in obese men, few have looked at the relationship between exercise and sex in healthy men, according to scientists.
