Week-only exercise brings health benefits

Overworked routine ends difficulty or discouraging people who exercise, but those who already set aside the weekend to do physical activities can celebrate. According to a study published last week in the journal "JAMA Internal Medicine", exercising once or twice a week is not as harmful as that.

The researchers University of Loughborough in the UK analyzed data from more of 60,000 middle-aged adults between 1994 and 2012. During the period, almost 9,000 of them died, for different reasons. Throughout the research, participants followed the minimum recommendation of international health agencies: 150 minutes of moderate physical activity per week or 75 minutes of intense activity.

The result showed that people who exercised several times throughout the week had a a reduction of 35% in the risk of death and participants who had only one or two sessions achieved a 30% reduction in relation to those who were completely sedentary.

According to experts, the probability of dying from a cardiovascular problem was 41% smaller for those who exercised more often and 40% lower among those who moved at the weekend. As well as, the reduction in the risk of death from cancer was 21% for those who did frequent activities and 18% for those who exercise intensively once or twice a week.

"Millions of people like to do sport one or twice a week, but they may be worried that they are not doing enough, but now we find a clear benefit. Exercise only once or twice a week is able to make people healthy, "commented Gary O'Donovan, researcher of physical activity at Loughborough University and author of the study.

However, the study showed that moderate exercise is required before any vigorous exercise is introduced. In addition, experts do not believe that practicing physical activity on weekends alone is appropriate, to maintain health one would need to perform exercises with recommended frequency.
