Exposure to electromagnetic waves in pregnancy favors children's asthma

A study published in Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine found that children whose mothers were highly exposed to electromagnetic fields during pregnancy are more likely to develop asthma. For the analysis, 801 pregnant women used electromagnetic field meters for 24 hours. The study was led by American scientists at Brown University. The device detected waves coming from microwaves, hair dryers, fans, coffee makers, fluorescent lamps, power cables and power plants. After the experiment, the team followed the medical reports on children's health in the subsequent 13 years. The results showed that mothers who were among the 10% most exposed to electromagnetic fields were 3.5 times more likely to have children with asthma than the 10% least exposed. In total, 130 children or 20.8% of the total developed asthma, and most of them were diagnosed with the problem before age 5. Asthma is caused by malfunctioning respiratory system organs and the immune system. Breastfeeding reduces asthma risk

Another study, published in the online version of the European Respiratory Journal, found that infants fed exclusively breast milk during - at least - six months are less likely to develop asthma symptoms in childhood. The research was led by researchers at the Erasmus Medical Center in the Netherlands.

The survey had information on feeding more than 5,000 children in the first year of life. Their families were questioned about their breastfeeding time and whether other foods were part of their diets during that time. Next, data on the health of each participant were collected until they were four years old.

The results showed that three groups of children were more likely to have wheezing and persistent catarrh, typical asthma symptoms: children who had never been breastfed; those who received breastmilk but for less than the first six months of life, and those who also ate other types of milk and solid foods during the first five months of life.

All of these children were more likely to present wheezing, shortness of breath, dry cough, and persistent catarrh until the age of four. Asthma is a respiratory disease due to the continuous exposure of the allergic to the object that causes their attacks without treatment. The sooner you are diagnosed, the greater the chances of a person leading a completely normal life.

Beautiful couples have more daughters, suggests study

The evolutionary psychologist Satoshi Kanazawa of the London School of Economics conducted a survey in which he concluded that "beautiful parents tend to have more daughters." For this study, which will be published in a forthcoming issue of the journal Reproductive Science, Kanazawa tracked 17,000 British babies born in the 1950s.
