Compliant or elastic hymen does not break and may cause pain in the sexual act

First we must understand that the hymen is an incomplete membrane that separates the region of the vulva from the entrance of the vagina. In the embryonic stage it is closed and, before birth, a destruction of the cells of its center takes place thus opening a passage. Sometimes this degeneration does not occur properly. Thus, three types of hymens are formed:

• Imperforate: this is the most common alteration of the malformations of the hymen that obstruct the vagina. In this case the menstrual blood accumulates in the hymen, especially in adolescence, often leading to an emergency situation - once this accumulation causes pain. We call this Criptomenorreia, that is, hidden bleeding.
• Incomplete opening: this is the microperforated hymen, septate (trave in the opening) and cribriform with several perforations. These pictures do not lead to obstruction of menstruation.
• Annular hymen (ring-shaped): this is the most common. There may be, in some cases, a fibrous ring around it, which forms the compliant hymen. Like incomplete openings, it can prevent penetrative intercourse or make it very painful, since it does not break.

These anatomical changes can be seen and evaluated in a simple clinical examination. Treatment may occur at any time during the development of the child and adolescent.

Treatment

In some cases, surgery becomes necessary. It is simple, made with anesthesia and reshapes the proper opening of the vagina. During the first sexual intercourse, the hymen is ruptured and may lead to mild bleeding.

Women and adolescents should know their bodies. And it is important for them to know that even without having intercourse, they can use tampons without any problem.

If sexuality is already full of prejudices and taboos between us, the hymen is where they materialize. Until very recently, in 2003, our constitution determined that marriage could be annulled if the woman was not a virgin. With this, in many places the plastic to remake the hymen has become common. We must educate society and show that a woman's sexuality is much more than the hymen.
