I was a month without sugar and I survived

I was always that person known as "ant." The one that exchanges any salty for a candy. Cakes, pies, candies, chocolate and ice cream have always been a great pleasure in my life. And, of course, nothing was too sweet. Even when I was going to eat something healthy, I preferred the options that tasted sweet.

The problem was when that pleasure began to slip from my control and I could not imagine refusing a candy. That's when I realized that spending a day without sugar was out of the question in my routine. So I was scared, I did not like the feeling of realizing that something about my own body was out of my control.

I did not notice, but part of the swelling in my body was caused by sugar consumption. I also had no idea how well-connected my well-being was to candy (and I learned it in a slightly painful way you will see below). Inspired by challenges I saw on the internet, I decided to embark on the 30 days without sugar. I confess I did not have much idea of the bush I was in. Yes, it was difficult, and how it was! But I survived and I'm already ahead of you: this experience has transformed me.

Below, I'll tell you more about how it all was, but first of all I make clear exactly what was cut from my diet: refined sugar and any other types of sugar (such as demerara sugar and brown sugar), sweeteners, honey, cane molasses, etc. The only sweet foods I consumed in the period were fruits and dried fruit, that is, fructose. And no, I did not cut the carbohydrate. If you want to better understand the relationship between carbohydrate and sugar and how it works in your body, click here.

1st week

The first three days were quiet because the challenge motivation was still high, so it is simpler to refuse sugar. I had some temptations, like resisting ice cream after lunch with the family, but I did. Only after the 4th day, everything was over.

It was when I found myself crying for having asked for milk with chocolate in the bakery, without remembering that I could not take it. As soon as the drink arrived on the table, before I started to drink, I realized that I could not, and then a feeling of frustration and enormous sadness took over me. I ate my bread on the plate with watery eyes, got out of the bakery, got in the car, and sobbed like a child.

This episode describes how the next days of my challenge were. During this week, I even had trouble concentrating and organizing at work. Therefore, it is important to count on the understanding of colleagues and friends at that time, you will need.

2nd week

A roller coaster of emotions. There were days when I felt terrible, without energy and very angry. Already the next day, the feeling was as if I were on the best day of my life: cheerful, good-humored and willing. I also noticed some changes in the body, such as a decrease in swelling and belly more redness.

I did not notice changes in the balance and I did not get too attached to it, because it was not my main objective, after all I wanted to change the relationship with candy, and because along with the cut of sugar I ended up adopting a workout and a diet that contributed to my gain of lean mass.

That was another advantage: I ended up getting more worried about the quality of my food in general. In the market, I would look at food labels to see if they had sugar or sweetener, which made me want to know more about everything I was consuming.

That's when we realized that the options of sugar-free or sweetener are very few, especially when it comes to industrialized foods. Food fit, diet, made with natural items, anyway, practically everything has some sweetening substance. This makes the challenge process difficult and makes you need to plan very carefully what you will eat throughout the day, especially in snacks between meals. It is best to opt for what is as natural as possible and if you can, prepare your snacks at home.3rd week

The desire to eat sweet has diminished, but temptations do not. With the approach of Easter, the chocolates began to appear at work and at home, but I was able to resist firmly. Although I no longer think so much about sweets, seeing other people eating has just awakened a desire to experiment as well. But to dodge the temptations, I used the fruits and dried fruit, which gained more space in my heart. It is amazing how they get the most flavor, as our taste clears from the refined sugar.

Another aspect that changed was my skin, which is naturally acneic and was much more damaged by sugar. With the cut of the sweets, I felt my skin less oily and had no new spine.

4th week

In the final stretch of the challenge I already noticed a reduction of cellulite in the legs, which today, after the end of the challenge, gives me more motivation to keep control over the consumption of sweets. At the end of this period, she was not desperate to eat candy either. On the contrary, it could quietly continue without sugar. But if you follow us on Instagram (@ officialhairministry), you should have seen that I took a milkshake from Brigadier to see what the reaction of my body would be after 30 days.

But of all the benefits I've had (it was benefits, no downside), the cool thing was to realize that I I can deny a candy and I will survive by not eating sugar daily. Breaking the dependency cycle with candy is more liberating than we can imagine.

The challenge is over, and now?

It's no good finishing the challenge and not making any real changes to it all, right? Therefore, my goal is to stay away from sweets during the week and allow me to eat desserts on the weekend, always with balance, not wanting to "discount" for not having eaten candy in the previous days.

Many people thought that when I finished the challenge I would want to "make up for lost time" and eat all the candy I saw in the front, but no. And this is the time to establish and strengthen this new habit in the body. The sweets are still tasty, although I can not eat the same amount as before. But we know that the body adapts and that it can easily go back to the old way of being out of control by sugar. Therefore, it is essential to set certain limits in the routine to continue reaping the good fruits of a balanced diet.

Beware of excessive grain consumption

Beware of excessive grain consumption

One of the most popular and most consumed foods in the world has an indigestible taste for some people. Rich in gluten, bread made from wheat flour causes a degenerative process in people who are sensitive to that protein, ie in individuals who have been diagnosed with celiac disease. Some studies show that this condition can increase up to four times the risk of premature death, cause depression, facilitate the onset of Alzheimer's disease, attention deficit and hyperactivity.
