Inclusion of disabled students in schools grows 6 times

Inclusion of disabled students in schools grows 6 times

The number of young people with disabilities in common classrooms has a significant increase between 2005 and 2015. According to the School Census of Inep (National Institute of Studies and Educational Research Anísio Teixeira), the presence of special students increased 6%, rising from 114,834 to 750,983.

In the first cycle of primary education, students with disabilities correspond to 2.9% of total enrollments, a proportion that decreases to 1.8% in the second stage of this level of education and reaches only 0.8% in high school.

Growth can be linked to changes in legislation and the National Policy on Special Education in the perspective of Inclusive Education, approved in 2008. In June 2016, the Federal Supreme Court (STF) confirmed the prohibition of schools to charge fees

Inep data show that in 2015 there were 930,683 students with disabilities and developmental disorders in regular education and in the EJA (Youth and Adult Education).

Among these students , 81% studied in ordinary schools and only 19% in colleges or rooms exclusively for people with disabilities. In 2005, the picture was completely different, only 492,908 people with special needs were studying in the country.

Despite the increase in the number of children with disabilities in the classroom, there are still difficulties to be overcome in order for inclusion to occur completely . It is common to find, for example, teachers without specific training to teach students with special needs, excessive number of students per room, lack of knowledge about the characteristics of the deficiencies and lack of infrastructure in the teaching places.
