Infections cause two million new cases of cancer per year

Research published in the medical journal The Lancet Oncology has revealed that infections caused by viruses, bacteria or parasites cause about two million new cases of cancer each year. The number corresponds to one-sixth of the more than 12,000 new cases of the disease reported worldwide in 2008.

Infections caused by hepatitis B and hepatitis C, human papillomavirus (HPV) and stomach bacterium Helicobacter pylori account for most cases, with 1.9 million, mainly cancer of the liver, stomach and cervix. In women, cervical cancer accounted for about half of the cases caused by infection. In men, tumors in the liver and stomach account for more than 80% of cases. The researchers also found that about 30% of the cases of the disease caused by infections occur in people under 50.

The researchers considered the infectious agents classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer - Agency Cancer Research.

Of the 12.7 million new cases of cancer that occurred in 2008, 16.1% were caused by infections, which represents 2 million new cases. This fraction was higher in less developed countries (22.9%) than in the more developed countries (7.4%), and ranged from 3.3% in Australia and New Zealand to 32.7% in sub-Saharan Africa. > There are two types of HPV that can become cancer

According to gynecologist and obstetrician Barbara Murayama, HPVs 16 and 18 account for about 90% of cases of cervical cancer. "Viruses can also cause cancer of the anus, vagina, vulva, penis or mouth," he explains. Barbara also notes that some other types of HPV can become cancer if the infection is persistent and recurrent, but not all have this force. "Some will only cause what we call genital wrinkles."

According to the specialist, the symptoms are manifested mainly in women and most of them have the first contact with HPV between 15 and 25 years of age. The Pap smear is responsible for identifying the disease in the cervix and should be done all year long by women of active sex life.

Prevent HPV

The professor of the Department of Urology of Santa Casa de São Paulo, Julio José Máximo de Carvalho advises that because HPV is usually transmitted through intercourse, condom use greatly reduces the possibility of transmission of the virus, although it does not prevent it altogether. Therefore, using condoms is recommended even among married partners. The urologist also advises to avoid smoking and the use of drugs that can interfere negatively in the immune system, facilitating the infection by HPV. The multiplicity of sexual partners also favors the transmission of the virus.

Protect from hepatitis

Considering the most common types of hepatitis in Brazil, hepatitis A and B have a vaccine, while hepatitis C does not. Preventive care varies for each type, check:

Hepatitis B and C:

viruses are transmitted by blood contact. Manicure instruments that are contaminated can allow infection if there is any injury to the hands or feet. Paul also recommends that anyone who has a history of blood transfusion, injecting drugs, tattooing, piercing, exposure to contaminated blood, having sex without condoms, or altering liver function blood tests should see a doctor for tests. >
