Ingesting 1 or 2 doses of alcohol per day increases risk of liver disease

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), excessive alcohol consumption is the most common cause of cirrhosis worldwide. A new global study presented at The International Liver Congress 2015 showed the significant influence of daily alcohol intake on liver diseases.

Researchers from the European Liver Study Association conducted a comprehensive review of the Global Situation Report on Alcohol and WHO, which included parameters for alcohol consumption in 193 countries. Scientists categorized countries as heavy or moderate drinkers based on average daily alcohol consumption, with heavy intakes of up to 1 drink per day for women and up to 2 drinks for men.

In addition, other reports from the World Health Organization for cases of hepatitis, cirrhosis and other diseases, in order to determine the correlation between alcohol consumption and increased risk of hepatic complications.

The researchers concluded that moderate to heavy alcohol consumption increased by 11, 13% the risk of cirrhosis. It is important to note that specific consumption patterns, such as drinking high amounts of alcohol episodically or the type of drink ingested, are not independently related to the increased risk of liver disease. Thus, the work shows only that ingestion of 1 or 2 alcoholic beverages per day can increase the chances of liver disease.

According to the World Health Organization, about 6% of the world's deaths are caused by consumption of alcohol, most of them alcoholic cirrhosis. Half of all cases of cirrhosis is caused by alcohol.

Managing your stress can also help protect your oral health, say Brazilian researchers. Scientists have reviewed more than two dozen studies conducted between 1990 and 2006 to determine whether life-negative events and psychological factors may contribute to increased susceptibility to periodontal disease.
