Interview with Oscar Schmidt: "That tumor picked up the wrong guy"

Interview with Oscar Schmidt:

Life sometimes plays tricks ... Imagine being on vacation in Orlando (United States) with your family, and finding out you have brain cancer? That's what happened to Oscar Schmidt in 2011. "I was in a spa with my wife and kids and I fainted. It was a hell of a mess, they called 911, there was police, firefighter and ambulance to help me," he says. Upon arriving at the hospital and doing tests such as MRI and CT, he found that there was a tumor that was more than seven centimeters in his brain.

Back in Brazil, he took out the astrocytoma-like tumor that was in grade 2 of the disease , a little less serious. The speaker and former basketball player continued to follow life, taking tests regularly to prevent other problems. Until in May 2013 a new tumor appeared in his brain and he has begun to treat it. For him, the year 2013 is getting very hectic: in addition to being diagnosed, he has been nominated for the NBA Hall of Fame, one of the biggest titles a basketball player can receive. And he also went face to face with the Pope during his visit to Rio de Janeiro.

Maintaining good humor and positive strength all the time help the treatment

The sportsman was with us to tell his experience in the event "Minha Vida ao Vivo ", first organized by My Life portal on August 5, in commemoration of the National Health Day. We talked with Oscar about how he is dealing with the disease. Soon he warns: "this little tumor took the wrong guy, did you see?".

What was your reaction to discovering the diagnosis?

The former basketball player has defended Brazil in the championships and Olympics

I was 15 minutes sad. I cursed and thought: the time has come! I thought it would take a little longer, but it arrived ... But I decided to make the treatment soon and continue, it's no use getting deluded. Life is too short, and you have ten more or less is not going to change what you lived. I lived very well and thank you every day. For 32 years, I did what I liked to do, and made money for it!

How did you find out that the cancer had returned?

After the first operation, I was doing resonances every three months. When the doctor increased the interval to four months, on the next examination he saw a tiny little carcine there, but decided to wait to see if it grew. In the meantime, I took another examination and traveled to the United States. When I returned, he told me that the tumor had grown and was probably already in grade 3. I operated a little after that, and the prediction was confirmed. As he had not yet reached grade 4, according to the biopsy, he indicated to me radiotherapy and chemo. I did 30 radiotherapies and 45 chemotherapies and now I'm going to continue doing a five-day treatment plan and a rest day for a year, month after month.

But do you believe that it is possible to bet on resources other than clinical treatment?

I had a tremendous sequel: unfortunately I do not like soda anymore! (Laughter)

Yes, at the same time, I'm not doing just that! Because if I do just that, I will only have the proven result of what the treatment does, and I am giving more chances to the man above [God]. I'm making perilla alcohol inhalations and I even did spiritual surgery, I got the liquid and I'm taking it. That is, if I have to leave, it is because my time has come. Of course, you have to do everything the doctors say, religiously, and if you can, do other things as well.

How do you use your optimism for your recovery?

I can not be sad, otherwise I die faster! But if I get in a good mood, if I do not think about the business and treat it right, I'll leave in 30 years or so! So I think of the tumor minimally! I do all the treatments, but without thinking about it. Why, he is not there anymore, if he comes back, I'll open it again! If I have to live a month, beauty. But if it's 30 years, the better! My life was beautiful, I never thought I would do half of what I got. The problem with this is all for my family, I hope the day I leave is not an immediate thump for them, like a car accident or a plane crash. Why, for the time being, who works here at home is me.

Oscar Schmidt tells how he was fighting to win the brain tumor in an exclusive interview

And how are you responding to treatment?

Oscar strictly follows medical treatment, but also bets on other alternatives

Treatment is Heavy, huh? I've never been so tired in my life, I'm starting to get better now. You have to take a medicine to boost immunity, which makes you sick. So you take another remedy for it, but it gives you constipation. Conclusion: I need to take laxative all day! (Laughs). Other than the other remedies you have to take. It's a great physical aggression, but luckily it's over! Now I'm just going to stay in the maintenance, make resonances more often than I did, and go on!

Operating the brain can often leave sequels. Did you feel any?

Treatment affects everything, I had a tremendous sequel: unfortunately I do not like soda anymore! (Laughs). What horror, how did I take all this? Today I only drink yellow juice or water. I think the body defends itself, before taking these drinks every day, and a lot. Today, I can not, my body tells me not to take it.

And this has changed something in the way you look at life today?

From two years to now I started to think: since this tumor was grade 2, can turn 3, I will detonate everything I win! I do not think of any more investments. I only travel, I buy presents for my wife, for my children ... I thought I did not have the time to do all this, but nowadays I'm enjoying more than I used to!

What message would you like to give to those who are going through this type of situation?

I say, if you had bad news, there's nothing to do, you have to deal with it. Do not lower your head because it is much worse! Keeping good mood and positive strength all the time helps the treatment. So go try it! Find the treatment you trust and follow. With optimism. Because your cells seem to understand a lot, you do not have to say much to them.

Challenge # EuFeçoPorMim: Allow yourself to live an experience for the first time

Wake up, have breakfast, take your child to school, go to work, shop, cook dinner, eat and sleep. Routine is important for things to keep walking, but overindulgence can cause people to fall into the comfort zone. For women, day to day life may be more cruel, as there are still stigmas that play housework for them.
