Is there a relationship between diabetes, obesity and depression?

Depression is undoubtedly one of the ills of the 21st century. Only in the last decades has been documented an expressive increase in the amount of people affected by it. In order to have an idea, in Brazil it is estimated by research that 10% of the population has already had a major depressive episode in a period of one year.

Depression, diabetes and obesity are three diseases with treatment and our efforts are for them are identified as early as possible

Obesity, in turn, is also considered one of the evils of this century. The most optimistic projection indicates that in 2025 about 20% of the Brazilian population will be obese. Diabetes is not behind, according to Ministry of Health estimates, 6.2% of the Brazilian adult population carries the disease.

The three diseases have a common link: approximately 30% of people seeking treatment for weight loss have depression, and those who are overweight are three times more likely to develop lifelong depression. In addition, people with diabetes have double the odds of experiencing depression. And the main point that could link these three diseases would be the accumulation of fat.

Fat cells and their relation to the whole functioning of our body is a subject that, when studied, has helped us to understand better because many diseases can happen together with others.

Being overweight leads to an increase in the production of insulin by our pancreas. From there, this excess can cause what we call insulin resistance, which is a situation in which although the body has a greater amount of insulin, it does not function properly, as if it were weaker. by weight gain and insulin resistance leads to a state of inflammation in the body. Here the fat cell when it is overloaded (with too much fat inside it) produces inflammatory substances that cause what we call an inflammatory environment. The development of diabetes may also occur as a result of this process, and what has been demonstrated is that depression as well. However, there are still numerous mechanisms to be elucidated. One, for example, is about weight gain. It is not yet clear whether it is the depression that leads to weight gain or if the opposite happens. But the issue needs to be looked at on both sides. Both the person with depression who is looking for the psychiatrist should evaluate for weight gain and risk factors for diabetes as the person undergoing endocrinological follow-up should be asked about depressive symptoms.

Knowing this, the most important thing is certainly the information. The more we know about the possibilities, the closer we get to diagnosing and treating them. Depression, diabetes and obesity are three diseases with treatment, and our efforts are to identify them as early as possible.

Blood from periodontal disease can be used to detect diabetes

Oral blood samples taken from deep pockets of periodontal inflammation can be used to measure hemoglobin A1c, an important measure of the patient's diabetes condition. A New York University nursing and dentistry research team made the breakthrough, saying it was good news for patients who may find blood collection in the dentistry less invasive than the prick of the finger.
