Know why older people sleep less than younger
Healthy elderly need less sleep than young people. In addition, they have a different behavior regarding sleep, requiring small periods of sleep during the day instead of several hours at night. A study by the Clinical Research Center at the University of Surrey in the United Kingdom found that scientists studied 110 people of different ages. Healthy, all were maintained for a period of eight hours in bed. Older people over 65 years old had 20 minutes less sleep than adults between 40 and 50 years of age. Meanwhile, 20-year-olds slept up to 44 minutes longer than older people.

But that does not mean that older people should be unconcerned with regard to the difficulties they have to sleep. Having a quality sleep does well regardless of age. Insomnia, for example, can have serious consequences, ranging from lapses during routine activities, through the famous "hake" to depression. Decreased work performance and studies, increased risk of road traffic accidents, irritability, and increased chances of developing diseases such as hypertension and cardiac arrhythmia may also occur.
If you have had difficulty sleeping, it is critical seek a doctor who specializes in sleep medicine, because insomnia has a cure. The neurologist at the Institute of Medicine and Sleep in São Paulo, Shigueo Yonekura, says that "if the insomnia is simple, that is, it lasts less than 20 days, it can be treated with small changes in habits. days of duration, it is better to seek appropriate medical treatment. "
The use of hypnotic medications, which cause and prolong sleep, is part of the treatment. "There are benzodiazepine hypnotics, such as clonazepam, and non-benzo-daizines, such as zolpidem. Currently, preference is given to the second category because it has a lower chance of side effects and dependence," explains pulmonologist Luciana Palombini of the Sleep.
"Herbal medicines can also be used, among them valerian, which is hypnotic and has no side effects," he says. Passiflora, melissa and avenna sattiva are other plants that have calming properties and can help the sleeper to sleep better. In addition, there is behavioral treatment, which requires changes in habits by which the person becomes more regulated in relation to sleep.
Dysthymia is a chronic mood disorder, but does not meet the criteria for a depressive condition. Patients with dysthymia have an alternation between periods of depression and periods in which they feel relatively well. Most of the time, however, they feel depressed, preoccupied excessively and overloaded; everything is an effort, and nothing is basically enjoyed; have little energy and little disposition, feel tired, moody, and irritated to varying degrees; yet they are able to cope with everyday demands such as domestic and professional responsibilities but suffer a decline in quality of life.
When something bad happens, such as a resignation, separation, illness or even an accident , it's normal to spend a lot of time whining. However, it is necessary to fight against this feeling and learn to turn it around. Valuing achievements increases self-esteem and attracts positive energies. Therefore, every change in life deserves to be shared with friends, marked on the agenda and spread around the house with notes.
