Lung cancer deaths rise among women

A survey by the National Cancer Institute (Inca), released on Monday (29), showed that the male death rate from lung cancer had been reduced. However, the same did not happen for women, who had an increase in this rate.

Among men, the mortality rate was 18.5 per 100,000 inhabitants in 2005. That number dropped to 16.3 per 100,000 inhabitants in the year 2014, and this was the first time that the drop appeared in the surveys. This reduction is due to the decrease in the number of smokers in Brazil. In 1989, 34.6% of the Brazilian population smoked, against 14.7% of the population in 2013.

Women already passed the mortality rate from 7.7 to 8.8 per 100 thousand inhabitants between 2005 and 2014. Liz Almeida, manager of the Inca's Population Research Division, explains that the epidemic of smoking among women occurred well after men, peaking in the 1970s. Because lung cancer is a disease that takes 20 years to develop , female mortality is still under the impact of increased cigarette consumption in this period.

According to epidemiologist Mirian Carvalho de Souza, research coordinator, the female mortality rate due to lung cancer has not been predicted to stabilize.

In Sweden, blood donors receive SMS when saving a life

Blood banks in the world suffer from decreased blood donation. In Brazil alone, 3.7 million blood bags are collected per year, but the ideal would be 5.7 million. To encourage donations and show how much it is important to donate, the Hemocentre in Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, sends an SMS of thanks to the donor every time your blood is used.
