Lymphoma: swelling of the lymph nodes is the initial symptom

Lymphoma is a cancer that originates in the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system, in turn, is a complex network of vessels through which the lymph circulates, lymphocytes are established, which are the body's defense cells. The disease develops in the lymph nodes, found in various parts of the body, especially in the axilla, neck and groin.

The symptoms of lymphoma are diverse and nonspecific. Occasionally there is:

  • Tiredness or weakness
  • Fever
  • Sweating
  • Weight loss
  • Body pain
  • Weight loss
  • Appearance of palpable nodules whose location depends on where the lymphoma started .

In later stages, the patient may have severe fatigue and weight loss, as well as specific symptoms of the affected organ.

Early diagnosis of lymphoma is possible. As soon as an increase in lymph node is noticed, the physician should be consulted and, if necessary, the diagnosis is made through a biopsy of this lymph node or involved organ. These are useful tests for the diagnosis and staging: tomography of the chest and abdomen, PET-scan, laboratory tests and bone marrow biopsy.
