Microcephaly: 41 cases are related to Zika virus

The Ministry of Health released on Friday, 12, a new epidemiological bulletin of cases of microcephaly in the country. According to the material, 462 cases being studied were confirmed for microcephaly or other central nervous system disorders, with 41 being related to the Zika virus.

Another 765 cases reported were discarded for normal examination or microcephaly and / or changes in the central nervous system due to non-infectious causes. Currently, the Ministry investigates 3,852 suspected cases of microcephaly in the country.

Altogether, 5,079 suspected cases of microcephaly were recorded from the beginning of the investigations on October 22, 2015 until February 6, 2016. Of this total, 62.5% of cases (3,174) were reported in 2015 and 37.5% (1,905) in 2016.

Microcephaly in the states

The state of Pernambuco remains the largest number of confirmed cases with respect to the Zika virus (33 ), followed by Rio Grande do Norte (4), Paraíba (2) and Ceará and Pará with one case each.

According to the report, the 462 confirmed cases were registered in 175 municipalities in 13 states: Alagoas, Bahia, Ceará, Espírito Santo, and the state of Amazonas, Pernambuco, Piauí, Rio Grande do Norte, Rio de Janeiro and Rio Grande do Sul. The Northeastern region has the highest number of confirmed cases, with Pernambuco continuing with the highest number of cases confirmed (167), followed by the states of Bahia (101), Rio Grande do Norte (70), Paraíba (54), Piauí (29) and Alagoas (21).

Autochthonous Circulation

To date, with autochthonous circulation (when the virus is acquired in the same place that is registered, that is, that people did not need to travel to contract the disease) of the virus Zika 22 units of the federation. Deaths due to microcephaly

In total, 91 deaths were reported due to microcephaly and / or central nervous system alteration after delivery (stillborn) or during pregnancy (spontaneous abortion) . Of these, 24 were investigated and confirmed for microcephaly and / or central nervous system alteration, eight of which were discarded. The Ministry of Health advises pregnant women to adopt measures that may reduce the presence of the Aedes aegypti mosquito, with the elimination of breeding grounds, and protect themselves from mosquito exposure, such as keeping doors and closed or screened windows, wear pants and a long-sleeved shirt and use repellents allowed for pregnant women.
