Microcephaly: 3,174 research cases registered in the country

The Ministry of Health released on Tuesday, 05, the first epidemiological report of 2016 on the suspected cases of microcephaly related to the Zika virus. Until January 2, 3,174 suspected cases of the disease in newborns of 684 municipalities of 21 units of the federation were registered and, for the first time, a case is being investigated in the state of Amazonas.
In addition to the suspected cases, 38 deaths of infants with microcephaly possibly related to the Zika virus are under investigation. The state of Pernambuco has 1,185 suspected cases, which represents 37.33% of the total recorded in the entire country. Then there are the states of Paraíba (504), Bahia (312), Rio Grande do Norte (169), Sergipe (146), Ceará (134), Alagoas (139), Mato Grosso (123) and Rio de Janeiro 118). Minas Gerais has 18 suspected cases, São Paulo six and Rio Grande do Sul one.
Combat actions throughout the country
The Ministry of Health has joined efforts to combat the mosquito Aedes aegypti, transmitter of the disease, summoning the public power and the population. Among them the visits to residences for elimination and control of the vector with the reinforcement also of the Armed Forces. In December, a further 17.9 tons of Larvicide were sent to the states of the Northeast and Southeast, totaling 114.4 tons for the entire country in the last year, enough to treat 57.2 billion liters of water. For this year, a further 100 tons of the product have already been purchased, which guarantees supplies until June 2016.

The Ministry of Health recommends that pregnant women maintain follow- with all the exams recommended by the doctor. It also reinforces the orientation of not using alcohol or any other type of drugs, not using medicines without medical advice and avoiding contact with people with fever or infections. In addition, it is important for pregnant women to take measures that can reduce the presence of mosquitoes that transmit disease, eliminate breeding grounds, and protect themselves from mosquito exposure, such as keeping doors and windows closed or long sleeve and use repellents allowed for pregnant women.
