Migraine may be linked to erectile dysfunction in men

Men who have been diagnosed with erectile dysfunction are more likely to have migraine than men without sexually transmitted disease, according to a new study by the National Taiwan University's College of Medicine and published in the journal Cephalalgia . The research team collected information from 23,000 men from a medical database in Taiwan. Approximately 5,700 of these men had been diagnosed with erectile dysfunction, which is the inability to obtain or maintain an erection. The authors compared this group with another 17,000 similar men who had not sought treatment for impotence. Among men with erectile dysfunction, 4.25% had already been diagnosed with migraine. In the non-dysfunctioning group, 2.64% of the men had been diagnosed with headache.

The researchers further took into account other factors, such as heart disease and diabetes, and found that patients with erectile dysfunction had 63% more chances of having had a previous diagnosis of migraine than the men in the other group. It is unclear what might explain this relationship, but the authors state that chronic pain has already been linked to sexual dysfunction in other research.

For them, it is also possible that the use of some migraine medications may interfere with sexual function of men. They point out, however, that the results need to be confirmed by other countries and other researchers so that it is possible to include migraine as a risk factor for erectile dysfunction or vice versa.

Six care that every man should have to avoid According to the latest data from the Brazilian Society of Urology (SBU), in a study in 22 Brazilian cities, 44% of men in the country have erectile dysfunction. The disease can be defined as the inability to maintain an erection that allows penetration and a satisfactory sexual intercourse for both involved. According to erectile dysfunction specialist Carlos Araújo, there is no single cause, much less a standard treatment for the problem. "The efficient solution is to thoroughly and calmly analyze the patient's problem, because illness affects people of the most varied ages and conditions," says the vascular surgeon. However, there are scientifically proven causes of erectile dysfunction.

Sleep well

In a study of Unifesp, patients who suffered from sexual impotence were awakened more at night and had a fragmented sleep, unable to reach the state of deep sleep . "In addition, lack of sleep increases the chances of cardiovascular problems and diabetes, it favors weight gain, contributing factors to impotence," says Carlos.

Stay away from drugs

A study from the Royal University of London points out that men who smoke are 40% more at risk of suffering from erectile dysfunction. The higher the number of cigarettes consumed, the greater the chance of having problems with sexual performance. Even those who smoke less than 20 cigarettes a day have the chance of experiencing increased impotence by 24%. "This is because the cigarette has substances that clog the microcirculation, which also affects the penis and erection," says the surgeon. A study by Unifesp also found that among users of alcohol, cocaine, crack and ecstasy, 47% have premature ejaculation, reduced libido and impotence.

Many young people who do not know the source of their erectile problem may have suffered trauma to the penis. Trauma is often caused during sports. If you have suffered an accident, however small, it is worth making an evaluation with the urologist or a specialist doctor.

A study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine warns that cyclists, especially males, should be careful about which bicycle seats they choose, giving preference to those who do not have the sharp tip. "It is not the case to stop cycling, because the problem is not very common, but it is worth looking at the correct seat," says Carlos.

Diabetes

The arteries of the penis are very sensitive to vascular changes caused for diabetes. "About half of patients with diabetes have erectile problems," says specialist Carlos. More known remedies, such as Viagra, have no effect, but there are other forms of treatment.

Tummy

Abdominal circumference is not a direct cause of erectile dysfunction, but the metabolic changes due to obesity can generate sexual problems: hypertension, high cholesterol, weakened circulatory system, among others.
