Ministry of Health conducts distance course to combat dengue

Fighting dengue is easy. Still, the numbers on the disease's progress are worrying. Recent data released by the Ministry of Health show that the number of dengue cases at the beginning of this year almost tripled compared to the same period of 2012. Up to February 16, 204,650 cases were registered, compared to 70,489 reported in 2012, representing an increase of 190%. Despite the increased incidence, the number of severe cases and deaths, however, showed a reduction. 33 people died as a result of the disease so far, compared with 41 last year. In addition, there were 324 serious occurrences of the disease, compared with 577 last year. To further reduce these numbers, the Ministry of Health launches this Monday (March 18) the distance course "Update on the clinical management of dengue" in partnership with the Open University of SUS (UNA-SUS).

Mosquito Aedes aegypti

The objective of the course is to make doctors and nurses in basic care and the emergency and urgency of the whole country learn or improve in the diagnosis and treatment of dengue. The expectation is that the training of professionals through the evaluation of clinical cases that occur commonly in the day to day allows an even greater reduction of severe cases and mortality from the disease.

How the course works

The course is composed of modules, totally self-instructive, there are no tutors, and can be done directly over the internet. There are four clinical cases to be solved by the participants. The participant will choose one clinical case at a time by clicking on the mosaic of the home page. Each case must take an average of 15 minutes to complete, and may be extended according to the need for research within the course content.

The professional must carefully follow the information presented in the cases and answer the questions. And when necessary, you can consult the Dengue management flowchart and review the patient's data before validating your answer, using the corresponding icons.

Course is aimed at health professionals

When the health professional feels prepared to answer, you must choose one of the alternatives. Soon, the participant will receive the feedback of his response. In the event of an error, a hypertext will guide you to important information for learning. After completing the course, health professionals will receive the declaration of completion.

Mobility facilitates learning

The distance platform used for the course is compatible with smartphones. Thus, the health professional can access the content via Ipad or Iphone. Another option is to download the content and develop the course without access to the network, either by computer or cell phone.

Doctors and nurses can also share experiences through social networks such as Facebook and also participate in surveys and discussion forum promoted in the course platform. Another tool available is an application for the Android system that can be downloaded on the cell phone to guide the health professional when to perform the clinical classification of the disease.

"We believe this course will be an additional tool in the qualification of our doctors and nurses in basic and emergency and emergency care, as it will provide the necessary knowledge to manage, diagnose and treat dengue cases, "explains Jarbas Barbosa, Secretary of Health Surveillance, Ministry of Health.

Awareness campaigns

The training is part of the activities developed by the National Dengue Control Program, which concentrates several decisive actions to achieve a significant decrease in the number of disease registries, severe cases and deaths. The efforts of Brazilian authorities and civil society to control the disease helped Brazil reduce the number of dengue cases by 28% between 2010 and 2011. The records and deaths of the disease have also reached significant falls over the years. > The efforts of Brazilian authorities and civil society to control the disease helped Brazil to reduce the number of dengue cases by 28% between 2010 and 2011.

The sustained reduction in the number of serious cases and deaths is mainly due to , the organization of the public health network throughout the country, the expansion of the flow of care and, above all, the early diagnosis. It is also highlighted as a contribution to this reduction, the effort of the health professionals and the surveillance and control activities of the Aedes aegypti mosquito, carried out by health agents and population, thus contributing to reduce the impact of dengue epidemics. This year, the federal government passed on a set of vulnerable municipalities for the occurrence of the disease, an additional resource of R $ 92.8 million for prevention and control actions.
