Ministry of Health includes medicine to treat AIDS in the SUS

The Ministry of Health included a new drug in the list of essential SUS remedies: dolutegravir, used for treatment of AIDS.

The remedy represents an alternative for the treatment of HIV infections for new patients and also for people who are resistant to other drugs.

According to the Ministry of Health, the dolutegravir has a low level of adverse reactions, less resistance and a higher potency.

The drug was already commonly used in countries such as the United States, France and Spain, and had already been claimed by seropositive patients in Brazil. The World Health Organization (WHO) is already working on guidelines for the implementation of dolutegravir as an initial drug in African countries.

On the other hand, fosamprenavir and didanosine have been replaced by other drugs with a better efficacy, safety and convenience profile dosage. The thermolabile presentation of ritonavir has also been excluded. This is because it has been replaced by a version that does not need to be stored in the refrigerator.

Currently, around 483,000 people use antiretroviral drugs in Brazil, according to Ministry of Health data, and 17,000 people are resistant to treatments provided. The Ministry also estimates that 800,000 people in Brazil will be carriers of HIV.

Other drugs

In this edition, rivastigmine was also included as a transdermal patch for the treatment of patients with mild and moderately severe dementia in Alzheimer's, which may increase adherence to treatment.

The inclusion of cinacalcet hydrochloride and paricalcitol for patients with hyperparathyroidism secondary to chronic kidney disease, thus offering therapeutic options to the group of more severe patients, is also highlighted. In addition to ceftriaxone for the treatment of ciprofloxacin resistant syphilis and gonorrhea
