The laboratory of the Vital Brazil Institute (IVB), in Niterói, delivered the first batches of rivastigmine to the state secretaries of Health, a medication destined to the treatment of Alzheimer's patients, on Friday, 29th. Four tons of the drug will be distributed free of charge. The quantity is able to meet the entire demand of the country. According to data from the Brazilian Alzheimer's Association (Abraz), about 6% of the 15 million people over 60 suffer from the disease.

IVB vice president Bernardo Horta says that much research to develop the drug formulation. "A multinational laboratory held its patent, which was subsequently expired," he says. "This led to the process of developing the formulation of the drug by our laboratory and, as soon as we registered with Anvisa (National Agency of Sanitary Surveillance), we started production."

According to Bernardo Horta, the remedy is available from July and will be delivered quarterly. The Ministry of Health will be responsible for the free national distribution of the drug, through the Unified Health System (SUS).
