Ministry of Health initiates distribution of oral test for AIDS in SUS

The public health network is now offering users of the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS) a new type of diagnosis for AIDS. This is the oral test, which is already being distributed to the states by the Ministry of Health.

Earlier this year, the Ministry of Health sent the states about 140,000 tests, of which 10,000 were for the state of Bahia alone. The Federal Government's forecast is that, by 2015, the oral test will be available to all people who want to do it. These tests were already being used within the Viva Melhor Sabendo project, a partnership of the Ministry of Health with 60 civil society organizations from all over the country. NGOs go out on the field to test key populations (transsexuals, men who have sex with men, people who use drugs and sex workers) in bars, parks, and other LGBT sites.

"This test is very important because we have around 150 thousand people in Brazil today who are living with HIV and do not know. Therefore, to have a rapid test that produces the diagnosis in about 30 minutes in an extremely simple way because it is extracted from the mouth and does not require laboratory infrastructure. If you are positive, the person has the possibility to look for the referral service and start treatment immediately, "explained Health Minister Arthur Chioro.

Across Brazil, about 14,000 people have already been tested for HIV by oral route, being 381 positive for the disease. Of this total, 43% had never taken HIV testing in their lives. The goal of the project is to reduce new HIV infections in these populations. Currently, of the approximately 750,000 people living with HIV / AIDS in Brazil, it is estimated that 150,000 of them are still unaware that they carry the virus. The number of positive tests in the actions carried out by the NGOs shows a higher index in relation to the data of the population in general. While the prevalence rate of HIV in the general population of Brazil is 0.4%, the rate of transvestites is 12%. In the transsexual, gay and male groups the prevalence is, on average, 5%.

In the oral test it is not necessary to pierce the finger or draw blood, as in the fast and traditional tests already available in the health units in the country. The test fluid is extracted from the gum and the beginning of the cheek mucosa with the aid of the collecting rod. The result comes out in up to 30 minutes. The great advantage is the safety and reliability, besides not needing laboratory infrastructure. When the result is positive for HIV, the person is referred to the referral service network previously organized for diagnosis and treatment in each project's host municipality.
