More than 790,000 cases of cancer in the world are associated with diabetes and obesity

People living with diabetes need to be alert at all times labels, measuring the amount of carbohydrates and blood glucose levels. However, an article published in the scientific journal The Lancet shows one more aspect that people with diabetes need to worry about: cancer.

According to research, presence of diabetes and high body mass index (BMI) are associated increased risk of different types of cancer. They analyzed medical records from 175 countries in 2012 and found that 792,600 cancer cases were related to diabetes and high BMI (body mass index). The researchers found that both BMI and high BMI were responsible for 38.4% of cases of endometrial cancer and 24.5% of cases of liver cancer.

The study, however, failed to find a causal relationship so factors such as diabetes and high BMI could trigger cancer.

Other study

This is not the first time cases of cancer are associated with the presence of diabetes and obesity. A study by the Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University in New York found that elevated blood glucose levels could cause increased chances of developing colorectal cancer

The findings came from the observation of 5,000 postmenopausal women. Fasting blood sugar and insulin levels were measured at baseline, and then at other times over 12 years. At the end of this period, 81 women developed colorectal cancer. The researchers found that women with higher glucose were approximately twice as likely to develop this type of cancer as those with lower glucose levels. No cancer was found to be associated with insulin levels.

Obesity - usually accompanied by high levels of sugar and insulin - is a known risk factor for colorectal cancer. For researchers, the impact of obesity on this type of cancer can occur because of the high glucose levels that accompany the excess weight, or because of some factor correlated with high glucose levels.

Diabetes and obesity in the world

A survey conducted by the United Nations found that obesity rates more than doubled between 1980 and 2014. By 2014, 600 million more people were obese.

Diabetes numbers also increased. Another report by the United Nations reports that the number of people living with diabetes in the last 34 years has almost quadrupled. The analysis shows that about 422 million adults worldwide, or 8 percent of the population, were living with diabetes in 2014

Chagas disease: understand the food transmission

Chagas disease is known to make the heart grow in size when it is in the chronic phase. What we usually learn at school is that it is transmitted through the feces of the mosquito barber - when it bites, it also usually eliminates the protozoa through the feces and by scratching the place we end up infecting ourselves.

Care for the elderly

The ADA recommends that the elderly brush their teeth three times a day or after meals with a soft-bristled brush; floss; clean partial or total dentures every day; drink from public water to benefit from the fluoride present. The ADA recommends that people stop smoking, as smoking increases the problems of gum disease, dental caries, and dental loss, and visit your dentist regularly for a complete dental check-up.
