Fish consumption may help relieve rheumatoid arthritis
According to a new study, fish consumption may be an excellent ally in rheumatoid arthritis treatments, a chronic autoimmune disease that has as its main symptom joint inflammation. The research, published in the "Arthritis Care and Research", investigated 176 patients with assessing the frequency with which they consumed fish over a period of one year. Fish with higher oil content of Omega 3, such as tuna, salmon and sardines, were selected. Fried fish were not included in the study, because researchers believe that frying reduces omega-3 content. For the analysis, researchers examined the levels of inflammation as measured by a blood marker called DAS28- CRP. The results show that people with rheumatoid arthritis who ate fish at least twice a week reported having less swelling and tenderness in their joints than those who rarely or never did.
Furthermore, the findings suggest that individuals who consumed portions of fish more than twice a week, were less likely to have the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis. Previous research has already indicated that taking fish oil supplements high in omega 3 fatty acids also helps alleviate pain in the joints associated with rheumatoid arthritis. In this way, the scientists wanted to carry out a new investigation to see if they wanted to see if the effect was present when they consumed the whole fish.
"Fish consumption has noticed many beneficial effects on health, and our results can give to patients with rheumatoid arthritis a strong reason to increase fish consumption, "said Dr. Sara Tedeschi, lead author of the study.
According to the researchers, there are many things besides the medication that people with rheumatoid arthritis can do to improve your health, such as not smoking and staying physically active. However, eating fish should not replace medical treatments, the important thing is to know how to reconcile both.
