Patients and dentists can welcome plasma technology in the war on tooth decay

Plasma jets can destroy caries-causing dental bacteria while sparing teeth, scientists reported in the February issue of the Journal of Medical Microbiology . The findings may mean that plasma technology will be useful for removal of infected tissue from dental caries, a procedure that conventionally requires the use of motorized drills, scientists say.

Scientists at the Leibniz Institute for Surface Modification, Leipzig , and dentists at the University of Saarland, Hamburg, Germany, tested the efficacy of plasma against common oral pathogens such as Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus casei. These bacteria form films on the surface of the teeth and have the ability to corrode the dental enamel and underlying dentin to cause decay.
