Physical Activity Helps Treat ADHD

Physical Activity Helps Treat ADHD

The journal Pediatrics recently published a study from the University of Illinois, in the United States, showing that physical activity is a great remedy for people with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). They ensure that regular exercise has improved cognitive performance and brain function.

It has been observed that physical activities have helped patients to maintain focus, develop working memory, and cognitive flexibility (ability to alternate tasks). The study, which lasted 9 months, also led to a discrepancy between the development of students with ADHD who practiced sports and those who did not.

Another study, conducted by Michigan State University, also in the United States, that during a 12-week exercise program there were positive outcomes in all children regarding math and reading, especially among those who had ADHD.

A similar study, conducted by Purdue University in the United States, published in the Journal of Attention Disorders, found that only 26 minutes of daily physical activity for 8 weeks can significantly decrease the symptoms of ADHD in primary school children.

So much evidence has led researchers to conclude that physical activities can be good allies in the treatment of ADHD, besides improving mood and cognitive performance, releasing dopamine and seratonin, with effect to stimulant drugs.

Consumption of energy drinks can harm children

According to the doctors who conducted the research, these drinks are especially dangerous for children because of the large amount of caffeine and other stimulants they contain. In addition to energy drinks, isotonics or sports drinks can also harm children and their consumption should be avoided.
