Practicing physical exercises strengthens the brain

The practice of physical activities is essential to maintain quality of life, helping to lose weight and still bringing disposition to the day to day. However, the benefits of exercise are not limited only to physical well-being, but also work well for the brain.

The Frontiers in Neuroscience has published a study based on several previously published theses, arguing that constant practice of physical exercises at light and moderate levels causes the formation of new neurons. This phenomenon is called neurogenesis in the adult hippocampus.

Scientists believed that the creation of neurons occurred only during brain development and was interrupted during life. However, during the new research, the production of neurons in various parts of the brain, mainly in the hippocampus, was discovered and, to the researchers' surprise, the exercises had a strong connection to this formation.

The hippocampus is a small organ located inside of the central temporal lobe of the brain and performs an important part of the limbic system, a region that regulates emotions and forms new memories. This would be the explanation for the formation of new neurons in this region to improve learning and mood.

However, the benefits of neurogenesis do not happen quickly: some physical activity is required on a regular and steady basis. In addition, the research only observed benefit in moderate and mild physical activity. High-impact exercise can cause negative results to the body, such as inflammation, injury, and dehydration.
