Pronounced footfall: a popular myth about running injuries

Pronounced footfall: a popular myth about running injuries

Most people who run have heard of the footprint and may become a risk factor for injury. However, a new study shows that this belief may be wrong, since pronation is a naturally occurring movement during the race. In this study recently published online by The British Journal of Sports Medicine, researchers at Aarhus University in Denmark, recruited 927 healthy men and women aged 18-65 who did not run but intended to start. This research differs from the others, which were performed with experienced runners and who already have a history of injuries, which can overlap one injury to the other, making it difficult to determine the primary risk factor. scales to determine the profile of each volunteer's footprint and how much it was prone. Then, they classified them and divided them into groups: neutral pronation, super pronation, severe super pronation, little pronation, very little pronation. They then gave all volunteers a same model of lightweight and neutral footwear, a GPS watch to mark the mileage traveled, and instructions for reporting any injuries that could be diagnosed by their personal physician.

After a year of running and several kilometers traveled at the speed chosen by the volunteer, were diagnosed more than 300 lesions. Among those who over-pronounced or pronounced little were not significantly more likely to injure themselves than runners with a neutral footprint.

Among volunteers who traveled more than 960 kilometers during the year, injury rates were slightly higher between runners with a neutral footprint than those who overpowered.

"Athletes who are starting up do not have to worry so much about the choice of sneakers."

This study suggests that some degrees of pronation may, in practice, not be abnormal and not contribute to injury. The finding coincides with a number of earlier studies that show that when runners choose their foot-based sneakers (for example, those who overdo and use sneakers to reduce pronation), they maintain or increase the injury rate in

Therefore, starting athletes do not have to worry so much about their choice of sneakers. To prevent injury, it is better to worry about body weight, type of training, behavior, age, and previous injuries.

Other researchers agree, according to Bryan Heiderscheit of the University of Wisconsin, USA, pronation is not a factor of and the correction of pronation with sneakers is inadvisable. "Several athletes who say they have an overpowered foot and use footwear to correct it, end up getting injured in the same way," he tells us. "In order to choose the right footwear, comfort must be taken into account."
