Psychosis is associated with low levels of physical activity

An international study done with more than 200 thousand people aged 18-64 in nearly 50 low- and middle-income countries have found that people with psychosis tend to have low levels of physical activity and are more likely to give up exercise easily compared to people without the disease.

Research led by scientists at King's University in London and the South London and Maudsley (SLaM) NHS Foundation Trust reveals the difficulties people with psychosis have to engage in physical activity on a regular basis. The goal of the data collected is to help people with psychosis be more active and thus improve their physical and mental health.

Previous studies have shown that people with psychosis die 15 years before the general population, largely because of cardiovascular disease. To stay healthy, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that adults aged 18-64 should do at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity throughout the week, including walking, cycling, housework, or sports.

The individuals investigated were divided into three groups: people diagnosed with psychosis, people with psychotic symptoms but no diagnosis, and a group of people who did not have psychotic symptoms. The researchers attempted to find out whether participants practiced the levels of physical activity recommended by the WHO.

Overall, people with psychosis were 36% more likely to not meet the recommended levels of physical activity. The researchers noted that men with psychosis were twice as likely to fail to meet the required recommendations compared to other people in the sample.

The researchers also found that mobility difficulties, pain, depression and attention deficit explained the low levels of physical activity in people with psychosis. These findings will be used in King's University's 'Walk this Way' study.

Study investigator Dr. Brendon Stubbs comments, "Understanding and overcoming these barriers could be an important strategy to help people with psychosis to be more active and potentially reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease in this group. "

The purpose is to broaden the study to reduce sedentary lifestyle and increase levels of physical activity in people with psychosis. "Our data suggest that depression can also be important, which makes sense. Understanding these factors and what we can do about them is an important area for future research," explains Dr. Fiona Gaughran, a researcher at Kings University in London .

Cancer is still a disease that scares many people. Despite the great evolution in medicine over treatments in the last decades, there are people who do not even like to name the disease. The numbers still impress. According to data from INCA, the National Cancer Institute, more than 489 thousand cases of different neoplasms are predicted in Brazil between 2010 and 2011, being more than 50% of them only in women.

Using Headphones and Exposure to Noise May Clogged Ear

The clogged ear sensation, known as atrial fullness, usually occurs when we are in a situation of rapid altitude change, such as in a flight or dive. The ear is filled with air and its internal pressure must be equalized with atmospheric pressure to function properly. When the ambient pressure changes, as in flight, the auditory tube, which communicates the ear with the nose, is opened to do the equalization.
