Preliminary data from a study released on Monday (27 ) by the Ministry of Health indicate a prevalence of 54.6% of HPV cases among the Brazilian population from 16 to 25 years old, 38.4% of which is a high risk for the development of cancer.

The results of the POP project -Brasil-Epidemiological Study on the National Prevalence of HPV Infection was presented at an event held at the Federal University of Health Sciences of Porto Alegre.

HPV (human papilloma virus) is a virus that affects the skin and mucous membranes , and can cause warts or cancer-causing lesions, such as cancer of the cervix, throat, or anus. Being a virus transmitted on skin-to-skin contact can be considered a sexually transmitted disease, the main form of transmission is through sexual intercourse, but it is also spread through the blood, through contaminated clothes or objects, through kissing and during childbirth.

According to the analysis, we identified demographic, socioeconomic, behavioral and regional factors associated with the occurrence of HPV in women and men between 16 and 25 years of age. The full research report will be presented next year. The study sample was composed of 5,812 women and 1,774 men aged 16 to 25 years, with a mean age of 20 ,6 years. The group was interviewed and underwent various examinations. In addition, data from 119 Basic Health Units (BHU) and a Testing and Counseling Center of the 26 capitals and the Federal District were included, with the participation of more than 250 health professionals.

For the time being, the results are preliminary and produced by means of estimation. The laboratory result was given to 35.2% of the samples for HPV, where it was possible to extract the information that 54.6% of the participants have the disease. However, as some municipalities have not yet closed the collections, this percentage may change until the end of the study.

According to the ministry, this is the first time that a study estimates the prevalence of the virus in the Brazilian population. The data is important to measure the impact of immunization in a few years' time. The vaccine against the disease is available for girls aged 9 to 14 and for boys aged 11 to 14.

According to the research, the capital with the highest prevalence rate of HPV is Salvador, with 71.9% of the population. population. Then, Palmas (61.8%), Cuiabá (61.5%) and Macapá (61.3%) appear. The city with the lowest prevalence is Recife, with a rate of 41.2%.
